His public demeanour is atrocious from the standpoint of being a respectable politician, but I think it just goes to show he's a human being. If I had to pick a PM of Canada or a Prez of the US (or even a lot of the hopefuls) from the last 20 years to live next door to, I'd pick GWB. He seems to me like he knows how to have fun and enjoy life. All the rest are just stodgy old white men.

From all I hear he is a great guy in person - he just isn't very "Presidential" and while I still don't disagree with the invasion of Iraq regardless of the WMD thing - I'm not happy with his being yet another politician who refuses to let the military do the job that needs to be done.

He'd probably be a great next-door neighbor and his dad would be, too, although his dad is likely to tap your phones and read your mail just for his CIA good-old-days kicks.

Clinton you wouldn't have around because you can't trust him around your daughters.

2. In 1976, all manner of events for their bi-centenial were planned and carried out.....and went over like lead balloons--non-events.

Really? I was 11 at the time and remember clearly my grandmother taking me to New York City to see the spectacle of the Tall Ships and the fireworks display on July 4th that was seen by several million people in person and by another 100 million on television.

The re-enactments I went to see in Concord and Lexington were stunning and instilled in me a love of history and a respect for the sacrifices of generations past that stays vibrant in me today.

Too bad you missed all the good stuff because you missed a historically wonderful time.

I was just about to turn 8, I can remember walking in the city parade with my softball team, we were the champs that year. The fireworks that night were amazing. We had a huge block party picnic type thing. Tons of local stuff going on. Its one of my fondest memories of a 4th of July celebration as a kid.

I remember people crowding the bank for a bicentennial quarter and a bicentennial half-dollar and then all the other stuff leading up to the 4th - and then the 200th anniversary of the subsequent battles and the Peace of Paris were observed. I was really disappointed when 1983 came and went and with it the official end of the Bicentennial observances.

Banned by Regina at 2007-06-28, 05:17:30. Expires: 2007-07-05, 05:17:30
Reason: Check PMs

Why would you get banned for not opening private messages?

GB would not read his PMs from Regina so someone suggested banning GB until he read his PMs.

Regina took up the suggestion.

Upside: we all get a break from the Master and Commander of Cut & Paste.

My Grandfather got all the grand kids a case with the bicentennial coins in them. My mom has ours in a safe deposit box for when we want them.

Sense '83 have you noticed a bit of less enthusiasm for the 4th, in the sense of communities doing stuff. For me sense I moved from home its not really been the same. The best one sense leaving home was actually down in Panama. The military down there went all out for the 4th. HUGE party for everyone. When we got off duty we could not get back to the other side of the canal where our barracks was. So we were a bunch of MP's with nothing to do. We turned in our weapons and had a blast, the General of southcom even commented on how great it was that once we were off duty we found a way to celebrate. It had rained and there was a huge mud puddle so we said what the hell and took off our tops and went sliding into the mud. He bought all of us a beer and walked off laughing. They had bands down there playing and a couple of my friends went stage diving. You could tell who we were because we were the only ones in uniform. When our capt. found out she tried to bring us up on charges till she heard that the General approved our actions. That will be a 4th I never forget.

Oh man see what you started bart. You've gotten me going down memory lane thinking of all the great 4th of July's I've had. This year I'll be at work just chilling with my best friend. The OVER TIME money was just too good to pass up. Anyway we would have just gone out and gotten drunk or something blah like that. We'll probably go up on the roof of the building to watch the fireworks as long as theres no major problems at work.

Maybe he did read them but did not respond or not know what private messages even are?

Even so I don't think it is worthy to be banned because someone didn't want to read your private message. I also don't remember anywhere in the forum rules that says you can be banned for not reading them either. But I guess this is like the skateboard topic some police officers overstep their boundaries.

Funny, in the Sacramento area the number of 4th of July events and parades have just skyrocketed since about 2001 - funny how 9/11 changed so much.

The little neighborhood parade in my part of town initially drew maybe a hundred participants and as many people along the route and now you have to get out there two hours early to get a piece of the curb to sit on. We had about 20,000 people out there last year with about that or more expected this year.

There was much more to this than just what you saw on this thread. Trust me, Regina had done a lot to try to get GB's attention before it came to this.

Sounds more like bollocks to me and people just don't like what he has to say. Also if Regina sent me a PM chances are I would have deleted it myself. :P

Plano, the small town I lived in prior to moving back to Austin, didn't seem to do as much as I thought they would. Then again being so close to Dallas most of them probably took off to there to celebrate. My apt. complex would gather out by the street and watch the fireworks going off.
