Hi everyone,
I have a quick question:
My employer is requesting a copy of my personnal bank statement every month to prove some business expenses where I can't provide them with an invoice (e.g street parking). Is it legal?
M.
PS: I live in BC

Only if you want to get paid for your expenses. How does he know you're not just making it all up? Also he would need legit backup for CRA if need be.

If you lost your receipts then your credit card and debit statements are the only way you can be reimbursed for whatever you spent that is claimable.

You could simply blank out the irrelevant transacations (blow-up doll, night at strip club, etc)

Nah, TOTALLY illegal. He should just reimburse you for what you claim you spent for him, no questions asked.

Just how much can you spend on street parking anyway? And maybe there's a parking lot with an attendant nearby that can give you a receipt.

Co-workers would love you, humourless Satan-spawn in management wouldn't have the slightest idea of how to react.

They can ask for things like this to prove you made the purchase if there is no other way. I've been asked for it from the government before. I send them a copy of my bank (normally credit card) statement with all items blacked out except the purchase in question and it was accepted all the time.

For certain smaller expenses like parking meters, you may not have to submit a receipt but may be allowed a set amount per day or week. Think I'm allowed to spend $5 per day for meter money. Anything other than that a receipt must be submitted for repayment. I've never expensed meter money but it's available to me. CRA are the ones who determine what is good enough and you can check with them for clarification.

You come here only to ask that question??? If you'd read some of our posts here, you'd have realized that getting the correct answer was an exercise in futility... questionable, at the very least. Now I understand why you don't have receipts and why your boss is checking you out. I had an expense account for 23 years, never once did I claim an expense without a receipt (except for millage) and never once did my boss ask to see my bank statement. Hold on a minute!!! I worked for the bank!
