I was having an debate with a friend. Do humans have instincts? I think they do, my friend says no. What do members think? Do human beings have instincts?
INSTINCT:
1) An inborn pattern of behavior that is characteristic of a species and is often a response to specific environmental stimuli: the spawning instinct in salmon; altruistic instincts in social animals.
2) A powerful motivation or impulse.

Sex!
The Desire For Intercourse! Raw Carnal Lust! ![Drool [drool]](./images/smilies/droolies.GIF) A powerful instinct in humans....
Also, there's that whole "fight or flight" thing when people are faced with threatening situations....
So I would agree that humans have instincts.

I know we have instincts. I live in the country so I run into animals alot. Sometimes at night when Im taking a walk down the lonley stretch of road I become more alert and any time I hear a crash in the bush, BAM im gone as fast as my feet will take me, lol. Instinct tells me run.
I think we have some primal instincts like other animals. When we feel uncomfortable or frightened, we run. Like when those clubs caught on fire and burned. The people instinctivly ran with out thinking. People took on a heard like behavior and ran one way. Even though people were being trampled, people ceased to think logically and acted on instinct.
Other instincts were born with are baby sucking nipple, hand that pulls away from fire and eye that blinks to flying objects.

Fear of falling.
Instincts,passed down in the genes?
Had to be. Monarch butterflys grandkids head right back to the old stomping grounds without ever being there before.

Flight or fight.
You fight or run, either way instincts will make you release your bowels for a faster getaway. Gross but thats natures way.

Sorry. I posted then came down with the flu something fierce the next day. I was home sick, but not computer able until last night. I brought up the hand pulling away from the fire one. I also stated something like the fight or flight, but more the "Okay, I've decided to fight but now I am getting my ass kicked" part of it. I stated curling into the fetal position for safety is instinct. Any fear that you are born with as well, because those fears may have served a valuble purpose to keep humans alive in early years. Such as fear of snakes, spiders, heights, the dark, etc. All of which can hurt you (well, not the dark itself, but what is in the dark)

We also have a learning instinct, if you can call it that. One way or another we always want to learn something new. Whether it is historical, scientific, practical, or social, we continually want to learn. We want to learn about others lifes, how to make our own better, and how to make the lifes of others better. Nearly everthing that we ever do will fit into one of those three catagories.
There is also preservation instincts. Primarily we will always try to protect our children (except in odd cases), secondly we will try to protect ourselves.
