AdamNF AdamNF:
Well what if there was a kitten hunt. Kill and mame all the kittens.

Hate to break it to you sport, but drowning kittens is a regular occurance on some farms. If unchecked, cats bread faster than rabbits.

But here's one for ya... what if people declared chemical warfare on innocent creatures like grasshoppers or mosquitos!! 8O

Simple solution for the first one...spay the animals. It's humane and it permanently solves the issue. Of course, if you've let it get out of hand, it can be a bit costly.

Your second point raises the interesting issue of the inherent heirarchy that we've developed within the animal world. Insects would be at the bottom, humans at the top, and cute and/or nearly extinct animals somewhere near the top.

Not talking pet house-cats here 'O'. They pretty much run wild on the prairies, rome from farm to farm and you can't even get close to a lot of them. A lot of times you'll uproot a bunch of starving little kittens when moving bales or emptying graineries...

They have developed rabies vaccine taken orally by Raccoons. China has developed a drug to be fed to rats that causes sterilization.

You can trap feral/wild cats, spay/neuter them and return them.

If they wanted to they could develope a better way of managine the seal population. However, it would require money. And even though you can't legally club your dog to death, wild animals are fair game.

You're aware that seals are wily varmints that live in the sea, right? You can't just drop some seal chow with a roofie in it on an ice flow and hope for the best.....matter of fact, what generally kills off a seal is starvation from wearing their teeth down, I've been told. What they do is, they chew breathing holes in ice so they don't have to come out of the water......

Yes, they come on out after birthing but it's not often you'll see a seal lounging around on the jetty like the sea lions in Cullyfonia.....

Gut filling cod or caplin with the drug is an option. Using tranquilizer darts is an option. They harpoon whales with radio tracking devices, they modify it for seals.

Many many options.

Of course there are many options....but whacking them on the noodle and shooting them are the most feasible. Disasters like the Hongkouver Island marmot reintroduction scam do nothing but waste tax money which could be spent in much better ways, or not spent at all and perhaps the savings could be used for tax breaks, however small.

Who can? The farmers? Should we trap, then spay or neuter gofers too? How about mice? Skunks? Rats? Cyotes?

Robair, earlier you posted about how farm cats breed fast. I was offering a solution to that. They're are hundreds of organizations that care about ALL animals. They offer to trap, fix and release CATS with NO COST to the farmer.

I offered some solutions to non domestic animal problems also. Do YOU have a problem with skunks, mice or rats? Cause I've not hear about killer skunks before (killer squirrels, but not skunks, lol) Coyotes is the proper spelling, btw.
But, thanks for including me on the "Pick on somebody in this thread cause I didn't understand or read their post properly" segment c:wink:

First, It's Vancouver Island. Not Hongkouver island. Vancouver (the mainland) is sometimes called HongKouver by the ignorant and racist. Which are you? The Marmot problem was not predators but subdivisions, and rural encroachment taking their natural habitat.

If that's the way you want to be, you can go hug a tree, little girl. I'm here for reasonable discussion, not knee jerk namecalling from children.

The marmot problem is that a gaggle of well meaning knuckleheads wasted a pile of money on these soon to be extinct vermin and released a few of them back to the wild where they were promptly eaten by a cougar....not a subdivision.

So what your saying is that they've always been near extinction? Please.

No, I'm saing that the problem is that the well meaning knuckleheads wasted a load of money trying to reintroduce these rats to a hostile environment. Might as well have fed them to the lions at the zoos.....

The nearest SPCA is a two hour drive from the farm. We have saved at least four dogs from there, by the way. There are no 'organizations' where I'm talking about. We have pet cats on the farm which are neutered and spade. (It was easier explaining to my five year old little sister why the doggy made her kitty go to heaven  )
Wild cats have litters of kittens in the cabs of grain trucks, in bail stacks, in graineries half-full of grain etc. I've tried moving litters that I come across but after you touch em', a wild cat won't take them back. So I can either let them starve or do them in. I've also started grain augers to empty a grain bin and halfway through it deposits a bloody mess in the truck THAT'S pleasant. Then there are the wild cats that crawl up under car hoods in the winter for heat (the block heater, the tame cats have an electric heater and blanket in the shop). So first thing in the morning you go out, start your car/truck and there's a horrible noise under the hood. You kill the egine and pop the hood to find cat crap and guts everywhere, that's also pleasant. Even worse is when a mangled cat STILL ALIVE falls out the bottom and you have to put it out of its misery. It's not like I hunt kitties or enjoy disposing of them. It's a shity job that my brothers and I 'drew straws' for growing up 'cause nobody wanted to do it. WILD CATS ARE PESTS ever witnessed what a cat with mange looks like? Better do it in before the tame cats get it...

Uh, yes, I do. No, not killer skunks (except the rabid ones), and we do have a skunk trap for relocating, by the way. Mice can do thousands of dollars worth of damage to stored farm equipment, but that's what the tame cats are for. Rats? These aren't your tame rats, Twila. They are large nests of the big mean suckers, I don't think you'll talk anyone in SK out of exterminating them!! For sure not anyone with chickens...
