ShepherdsDog ShepherdsDog:
using whole number, fractions, converting decimal values into fractions and percentages and vice versa. That would be very 'basic' math you need everyday. ratios and unit cost are essential skills as well. These are all problems we are faced with in daily life.
I like your answer better. On the making change thing. Very few people actually do the subtraction. Most just add up from the price to the amount presented. Like in $16.32 from 20. That's 33, 34, 35, 40, 50,75, 17, 18, 19, 20. It's a skill that is taught, not in school but in the workplace. Anyway, if you want to know what is being taught, cheque out your Provincial Math Curriculum. Here is the one for Saskatchewan.
http://www.sasked.gov.sk.ca/branches/curr/evergreen/math.shtmlI doubt if other provinces have one that is much different. If you don't like what is being taught, or how it's being taught, quite crying about it on the net and write a letter to your local friendly Minister of Ed.
