maybe each medal could have corresponding piping in regards to what you did: recce, infantry, artillary, airforce and navy. reg force and reserve.

How about we dont diferentiate and keep it simple.. Either you served or ya didnt... Too complicated otherwise i fell

I dunno, soldiers usually hate medals they get as freebies - Canada 125, Queen's Jubille etc....

All are pretty much the running jokes of the service.
