I've discovered one of the problems of Canada - Internet. Actually it can be solved for a half of the year, looks like there are not so many companies and those that are, do with their clients what they want. Everything you need is healthy provider competition. I have this + Cable tv (60 channels) for 15$ per month.

Canadians definitely pay too much for internet, cable and phone. My friend who lives in Florida during the winter pays just under $100 per month for HS internet, Cable TV (Bazillion HD channels including special ones) and two basic cell phones. For me to get a similar TV package it would cost over $150 never mind internet and phones. Not only that but the cool things he can do with his TV won't happen here for probably another decade.

I would love some competition with rogers, I hate rogers. They overprice you and you get jack shit for the money you spend. Bell is even worse or atleast on par. I've actually been looking for a alternative. Some company that just started or something, some small competition that offers good quality or atleast decent internet services for a reasonable fee.

Heres my rogers thingy though,

I'm surprised I found this thread. Thankfully, I found my solution, which was Teksavvy, which seemingly moved into the Windsor area not long after I stopped popping by on this site a while back. It's nice seeing $80 for both unlimited long distance for North America and unlimited Internet. It really makes me smile :D

Plus now I can kill zombies in Left 4 Dead 2 without paying another 30 damn dollars to Cogeco.

herbie herbie:
The problem with Canadian ISPs is they have BUY their pipes from the OLD BOYS and they are data circuits. They aren't fully deregulated.
So if they have to pay for bandwidth, so do you.
The Yanks still have hundreds of startups that are giving away the farm to get customers and if they are, the main players are too to keep their customer base.
Here they almost all gave away the farm and went bye-bye. Either failed or got gobbled up (and that's what's going on in the USA too).
You don't GET unlimited bandwidth usage from anyone. Telus, Bell and Shaw will eventually call you on your usage and if you upgrade to their most expensive (server) package, they'll leave you alone. And you most certainly don't get unrestricted bandwidth usage from a goddam satellite provider. That's the most expensive way to get bandwidth there is! You get satellite internet when there's no fucking alternative, and that's the only reason.
Same goes for Rocketsticks and cell-based shit. If you're a sales guy and travel and you write it off, it's a valuable asset. If you wanna watch streaming movies on your iPhone and shell out $100 a month you're a moron.
Home users have been piggybacking on the cash cow that is business service since day one, for landline phones, long distance and Internet. Any idea how many offices and schools try to piggyback 30-100 users on ONE DSL pipe? And tie up lines whining that their Net is slow?
I'm in the business, ppl. You know how many whiners I get about speed/usage limits/slowdowns I get from shitheads who are behind in their $30 a month payments and costing me $150-$500 a month for their use? Lots.
How many managers braying how they got better service form Shaw in their Toronto apartment and are so thick they can't look out the window and realize they're now 500 miles in the middle of the fucking bush and should be lucky they're not on dialup? That think their shit don't stink but they can't even drag and fucking drop or cut and fucking paste or read the fucking email header and Google why their fucking e-mail bounced?
Or how many times we roll a truck and find the shithead's got 20 open LimeWire upload ports running and so do 4 kids on the same router and he's so stupid he insists that that should still work full speed? Or think Speedtest.net in Vancouver is an indication of ONLY his segment of the line?
Fer fuck's sakes I'd be 100% on your side if they rolled out fiber to every street corner in every small town in the country and stopped ALL usage billing for EVERYONE including the ISPs. But that isn't gonna happen when the Carrier Boardrooms OWN the goddam Tories and Liberals lock stock and barrel.
Until then enjoy the ride, cuz you are gonna see usage charges on everything, filtering, and multi-tiered services unless things change big time. Google pages will load quick because they're a billion dollar customer but CKA will crawl. Hosting costs will skyrocket. You'll pay $1.00 to get an episode of Lost and pay again for downloading it. You'll see music and movie downloaders busted, just like in the US too.
Get the point? You want free enterprise, you live with the results. If it costs us ISPs, the cost is gonna get passed on to you. If there's stockholders they're gonna want ISPs to charge for everything they can. Sometimes you'll get a Blue Light Special when one tries to steal away subscribers, but those don't determine the market price, and they don't go on forever!

Your problems are your own, if we as customers feel we pay to much and we also feel that companies are screwing us around then we walk with our feet and our wallets

It's up to you to come to us, not the other way around

I care more about d/l speeds than u/l speeds. One of the reasons I haven't gone over to TekSavvy and unlimited DSL.

Shaw works well for me at the moment, but if they start billing me for overuse I'll ditch them real quick.

I have no idea where you are but I'm on Telus and they seem not to bad. They're basically a re-brand of Bell though but at least their customer service is a bit better. I hear their thinking of going to metered services too.

Kind of sucks when the hand full of providers we have all band together to give selves a raise.

I'm pretty happy with Shaw in Winnipeg. It wasn't as good in Calgary or Edmonton though for some reason.
