Not questioning if the did, I think they did, just not sure how it can be proven outside of their art. I'm just questioning if art shows they had a "sense" of mind. Does creativity indicate that the person is aware of his or her mind functioning?
Or am I totally misunderstanding your did the Neanderthals posse this "sense of mind and spirit" question?
Okay...I understand your point - I think that art is a true expression (especially when it's laced with spiritual connotations) of an entity's self-awareness. If you couple that with burial offerings (thus indicating a species' awareness of existence the finality of death), cultural traditions and its clear that Neanderthals were self-aware. Can we read beyond that with certainty? Probably not, but they're fair inferences
