Been there. Believe me, you will run it in under 12 minutes. And then, you'll wonder what the fuss was about.

It's not a question of 'if you'll slide through'. You will run it. Sounds like you have a good start so far though.

And Welcome to Vive Live long and prosper.
I failed swimming and passed. I saw many guys and gals who could not complete the run in the allotted time still pass. Others passed who could not do the minimum push-ups either. So... don't sweat it. Just do your best!

so the 11:56 time is just a "suggested time"? then what did dr Caleb mean about "you will run it in under 12 minutes."? And roy, how long ago did you join?
then what did dr Caleb mean about "you will run it in under 12 minutes."?
Meaning I remember basic training; and you will run it and you will keep running it, until you run it under 12 minutes. Sorry, that's the way 'basic' is.

oh, ok, so when i go to the recruiting depot, they won't kick me out just because i ran the 2.4k in 12:30 or so (improved my time a bit )? Then what time should i write in for the application paper, the actual time or 11:56?

They'll fault you less for not running in the alloted time (which can be improved) than for a such a major character flaw.
Are you still in the reserves Caleb? SO there are a lot of people who couldn't run the 12min and still got accepted, that's good to hear...
Are you still in the reserves Caleb? SO there are a lot of people who couldn't run the 12min and still got accepted, that's good to hear...
It's been a few years since I did basic, but don't worry about the 12 min time. Like the good Dr said, you will run and run and then run some more over the 10 weeks. Many people have varying fitness levels. As long as you try each time you will do fine. And no don't fudge your time, you will catch a heck of a lot more trouble for that than you would not finishing your run on time.

I take it you are being sent to do the basic course with all the other recruits? St. Jean Quebec perhaps? If so, don't worry about your fitness in week one... after climbing six to nine flights of stairs numerous times per day with legs that already feel like jello from running/marching earlier, your cardio fitness level will improve whether you want it to or not! Blisters and your feet will become good friends!

I was actually looking at a Reserves job ad today and pondered... could this broken ol' body do that all over again...

Actually, to be frank, I haven't even applied yet, however my decision to join has been made. I am only waiting for my parents to come back from overseas to sign the paperworks. It's just that i don't want to be rejected at the recruiting stage because i couldn't run the 2.4k, since i've already made a big fuss about it, told my family and stuff... That's why i'm asking. i actually live in B.C, so i hope that i'll be sent to chiliwack if i get in.

The 10 weeks you're talking about is the Basic training and Soldier Qualification combined, right?

Unless they have reopened it I doubt you would be sent there for basic training. Far as I know St.Jean is the most likely place you would be sent for your basic training. From there you will be sent for your actual mot depending on which service you are applying for. That is usually 8 more weeks and up.

At the point you are at, don't worry about not qualifying in regards to your ability to complete the run in the 'alloted' time. If anything that is more of a guideline than a solid pass or fail standard. Your recruiter should be able to confirm that for you. If you are accepted in you will be sent to meet with a trainer who will assess your fitness level. I am from Greater Vancouver and I did that at the Hotel Vancouver of all places! From there, you could have to wait some time before a new class opens up. I can't remember how long I had to wait, but it was a couple more months at least - use the time to get into better shape!

The initial 10 weeks is just basic training. It's really easy, and you will be there with those going into the regular forces along with others heading into the reserves. There will be people going into all facets of the forces there together. You will have a good time, you will meet lots of people from across Canada, make new friends and learn some interesting stuff, some of which you may never need to know for your particular occupation choice.

In basic - it's just that the very basics. Like how to use your kit, how to get your equipment and self ready for inspections, how to march, the ranks, first aid, learn how to use your rifle in a safe manner, spend some time in the field applying some of what you learned, and getting in shape!

St.Jean is good place for a young BC'er to be sent because it's close to Montreal. So if you behave yourself, you can spend the odd weekend in Montreal. Let's just say after being couped up with a bunch of guys and not being always able to do what you want, Montreal is the perfect place to relax!
I was at a session with one of the reserve artillery regiment a few weeks back doing the one day army familiarization program. One of the privates there who recently got out of basic and soldier qualification said he got sent to chilliwack last summer so.... And the lieutenant in charge of the course there said basic should last about 3-4 weeks, and soldier another 3-4 weeks. That's why the private was able to do both in one summer. And what class are you talking about Roy? The lieutenant said the paperwork should be done in like a month or 2, because i was hoping to complete basic during this summer...
