Just finished watching the 6:00 o'clock news tonight and saw that the American National College Athletic Association has passed a by-law placing sanctions on any college sports team that dares use a Native-American term to name itself!
High time I say! While we're at it, let's be consistent.
I mean, if Natives are all oppressed and discriminated against when Cleveland calls its ball team the "Indians" or Atlanta "The Braves", then shouldn't white North Americans be angry at the Dallas "Cowboys", or Bostonians at the term, New England "Patriots."
And what about Canada! Shouldn't non-native westerners be outraged by the term Saskatchewan "Rough-Riders?" Hey, I can't think of any term that belittles the suffering and loss experienced by the first settlers on the Praries as that one!
And what about the ignorance mainstream Canadians have shown towards the sensibilities of Italian Canadians! Imagine how all of you would feel if you were a descendent of the western world's model for representative democracy, yet it was being trivialized as the logo for a mere Ottawa Hockey Team!
It's time all this racism comes to an end!

Why would this be Canada/U.S relations? Seems more like a rant to me. And why would I or any non-Natives be offended by the name "Rough-Riders"?

Though you do raise a good point (rant rather than relations) stop trolling.

I think that was his point, Tman.... it's just a name
I remember a few years back the native community in NS got all pissed because they wanted the MicMac Canoe Club (yacht club) to change MicMac to Mi'qmag, which is the 'correct spelling'.... they weren't too worried about the fact that despite the name, no micmac person had ever been a member, much less founded the club.
But someone on some ANCAA board likely feels all warm and fuzzy for doing his part to reduce racism.

The best part is that it would be a cold day in hell before that yacht club would actually allow an Indian member. Mmm, delicious irony.

I don't see why you would assume that. I just pointed out the fact that they used the name with no actual significance.... as do most sports team names

I'm basing my assumption on the fact that most yacht clubs are joined by wealthy individuals. They don't have to be old white men but I would be willing to bet that they are the majority. In addition, I highly doubt there are any Indians with the wealth required to join a yachting club. Prove me wrong.

I really do not want to sound ignorant here.
What is so offencive in a team's name? Whether it be Indian or Eskimo or something.
It seems everything as to be so.... politically correct these days. A name is only a name. No harm was meant while picking the names.
If some team would call itself the ``Quebec Rednecks`` I would not be offended

There are plenty of natives in NS who have more money than I ever will, without even finishing high school. Yacht clubs aren't their 'scene' though.
Anyway, it was just a story that this thread reminded me of.... people who think that changing labels and names will cure racism.

I'm not quite sure what to feel, sympathy or outrage. Out here the only way an Indian could be more wealthy than a honest, hard-working, contributing member of society is if they actually have a job and you are just poor or the government gives them so much money they're still richer than you without working a day in their lives. (cough...Hobbema...cough)

There is such a thing as hard working natives... they have treaty rights which give them an advantage over others, but they still work (ie logging, fishing, etc)
Please don't respond to this.

The logos are worse than the names. That Cleveland Indians logo comes to mind...

I'm sorry, but this whole issue is just more PC bullshit. I personally have never read or seen any native bitching about these team names or logo's. I can tell you that natives in this area actually wear jackets, hats and jerseys from these teams, including the Clevland Indians I might add. If they don't have any problem with them, why does anyone else?
