Spain 2-1 Canada

SANTANDER, September 3 (International Friendly) - Luis Aragones set a new record by becoming the first coach of Spain to go 13 games without a defeat at the start of his reign as his players beat Canada 2-1.
More importantly for Aragones, however, will be Wednesday's World Cup qualifying game against Group 7 leaders Serbia & Montenegro.
The Spaniards go into that contest two points adrift of their opponents with both having played the same amount of games.
Whether victory over Canada will put them in a confident mood for that game remains to be seen.
Alberto Luque, Newcastle's big signing from Deportivo La Coruna, played a part in the first goal when he got free down the left in the sixth minute and crossed from the byline.
Raul Tamudo was unmarked in the middle and had a free header from the penalty spot which he guided inside the left hand post past a helpless Kenny Stamatopopouolos.
The hosts did not do any more damage until the 69th minute, when Ivan de la Pena split the Canadian defence with a through ball for Fernando Morientes and the Liverpool striker's first touch was poor, forcing him wide.
But Stamatopoulos committed himself, allowing Morientes to round him and finish from an acute angle.
Canada got a spectacular consolation 17 minutes from time when the Spanish defence stood off Sandro Grande on the edge of the area.
From all of 25 yards, Grande unleashed a curling shot that beat Jose Reina's dive and found the far corner of the net.
