Maybe the booby prize should have been a calculator. But she may not have known how to use that either.

Yes, indeed this is the funniest thread ever!
What's really interesting about this thread is that it clearly demonstrates the power of belief over the power of knowledge.
RPW, I'm not trying to make fun if you here, but in spite of the article claiming that 51 is wrong, despite pages of people explaining why it is wrong and how to do it correctly, you persist in believing that you alone are correct. The key thing about math is that it is not arbitrary. Follow the rules and you get the same answer every time, everywhere in the universe. Confidence is a great thing but since math is knowable and since there are hundreds of math websites, wouldn't it be a good idea to verify your claim independently before continuing on the same disastrous course?
8 x 6 - 5 + 9
8*6 = 48 48 - 5 = 43 43 + 9 = 52
or 8*6 = 48 48 + 9 = 57 57 - 5 = 52
or
8*6 = 48 +9 - 5 = 4 48 + 4 = 52
sum(+48, +9, -5) = 52
every single time in Vancouver in Montreal in Halifax
Of course, the blame for all this lies with the manufacturer. Human beings have a either a bug or a feature - depending on your point of view - that makes it possible to rationalize anything as long as it is in accordance with our general beliefs - despite all the facts to the contrary.
Fer instance, I smoke despite mountains of evidence that it's probably going to give me lung cancer. I rationalize this by telling my self that I don't want to live into my 70's.
On the other hand, if you were doing this just for entertainment value then the Juno awards need a new category.

RPW reminds me of the people who argue incessantly that airplanes can't take off on conveyor belts.

Blue_Nose Blue_Nose: RPW reminds me of the people who argue incessantly that airplanes can't take off on conveyor belts. How can a plane possibly fly - it's heavier than air!

hurley_108 hurley_108: Tricks Tricks: hurley_108 hurley_108: Only some scientifics do proper order of operations. It was a new thing as I went through. Maybe most do these days, but my first scientific didn't - it just did things as you punched them in.
Hurley, we aren't talking in like the 60s True some don't, but the vast majority do, and if you get a scientific calculator that doesn't, you fail. I'm 27! LIES!

Mr_Canada Mr_Canada: Tricks Tricks: This thread is turning into a swirling vortex of stupid. They don't cost alot. They are like 25 bucks http://www.thesource.ca/estore/Product. ... ct=6518192And the only class you should need them in highschool is calculus, and that's just because it takes forever otherwise. Everything else a calculator isn't necessary at all, I would know, I always forgot mine and did it by hand. Did that for like 3 years. $25? Wasn't so at the beginning of this school year, More like $100 for the exact TOP LINE calculator required by every student for my simple Grade 10 math class. And this was for average students. (Three Math Classes: Pure [Top], Applied [Average], and "14"[Slackers]) Not all schools are the same, Tricks. It was demanded that students go out and by the calculator in order to download the specific calculator programs and such the teacher had for the class. If you didn't have the calculator, you were given no help. Pretty much a "tough luck" policy. I know this because I wasn't able to afford the calculator for about a month into the class. And not everyone can do Math in their head. Download calculator programs? Show me this calculator. That's university shit right there, not highschool.

Tricks Tricks: Download calculator programs? Show me this calculator. That's university shit right there, not highschool. He's right. The Alberta math curriculum is centered around the TI-83 Plus.

The TI-83 was fairly common and recommended when I was going through high school, though I don't think it was "mandatory". I remember getting mine as a Christmas gift and laughing at the fact that the manual was about twice the size of the calculator.
I don't even use my TI any more with my work now - it's either spreadsheets and computer programs or my nice little solar powered Casio, which does have parentheses and order of operations built in.

It's not mandatory here either, but it's pretty central to the curriculum, so you'll be missing out if you don't have one. I use excel most of the time too, or other programs for my PDA which has a better screen, but I miss my '86. I lost it over a year ago, and being out of university, and with my wife having an '89, I can't justify replacing it. Though if I could, I'd totally go HP. RPN FTW!

Those 89s were just ridiculous - that's the point at which I said, "alright, just get yourself a laptop".
