Now that I am at the point where I have to think about what my second lense will be. I want it to be a telephoto, no question about that, but which telephoto? I have pretty much narrowed it down to these two. I was hoping those of you who have experience with telephotography could give me a few pointers. Here are the links to both from Canon.

EF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM
EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM

*edit* I made a typo, I had forgotten to specify I am looking at the IS model.

BTW i have a EF 400mm f/2.8L IS USM which is great but mucho $$$$$

but your pick of EF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM is the better of the 2 if you're going to spend that kinda $$$$

Im kinda leaning towards that one as well, its going to be tough to find a deal on it. Most of the reviews I have been reading have said the EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM is ok but the quality tends to drop off at the far end. Most the pictures I think I will be taking with either one are aircraft and/or wildlife.

I have sent you a PM but any review site will give the 70-200 F4 top marks. Best value lens Canon sells save maybe the 50 1.8 USM.

Let me know!

We have quite a few on the forum, I bugged Trev about making a sub forum for photography but no one really seemed too excited about it. What photo editing softwear do you use Eyebrock, I bought Adobe Photoshop Elements 7 last month. I was hoping for a more professional program but it does the job.

Good stuff hwacker! I'm a "L" lover!

Sapper, I shoot in RAW and use DPP then Elements 6. Elements does it for me, besides DPP I try to keep post processing to a minimum.

I picked up a Sigma 70-300mm F4-5.6 DG MACRO to try as my first telephoto. It was alright, but not great for really long shots. Sapper, whatever you pick, I'm interested in your reviews.

Same thing for you Hwacker and Eyebrock - especially any thoughts you have on wide angle lenses.

Thanks.

I think a sub forum would be great - or at the very least, begin a thread.

What do you have gunnair? My w/a is the 16-35 II. I had the Tam 17-35 which was half decent.

The 16-35 is a great standard zoom on a crop and awesome on a FF body. I have heard the 17-40 F4L is comparable at F4 though and is half the price.

Canon Rebel XTI - 10.1 mp. Great camera - but I have not been happy with my telephoto shots (mind, I need a heck of a lot more practise)

I'd go for the 17-40 Gunnair. A very good lens and you will be able to use it on EF-S and FF bodies.
'L' lenses hold their value.
I had a 24-70 that I had for 3 years and I sold it before Christmas for $120 less than I paid for it.

Constant aperture and when the 70-300 is at 5.6 the 70-200 can shoot a full stop faster. The 70-200 is way better built and has way better glass.

With the 70-200 and a 1.4 TC you can get the same FL for a lot less cash.
