In war you have to take extreme measures, can't be pussyfooting around with civil liberties. It's a war on drugs, and the only way to win it is to go in hard.

Except that controlling ho0w much currency people can take out of a country has far more to do with taxation than it does with any 'war on drugs'. The drug thing is just a high profile excuse to promulgate a policy that's existed for well over 100 years.

I have no problem with money laundering laws. You want to take currency out of a country, find a legal way to do it, and pay your taxes.

Again, you're assuming that anyone with 'too much' cash is a criminal.

What about one of those "hard working" illegal immigrants? This fellow could not use the banks yet he came by his money more or less lawfully (you'd hate him because he voluntarily worked at a job for $5 an hour - less than the minimum wage).

Despite that he lost all of his money because of the assumption that anyone with 'too much cash' must be a criminal.

Sucks to be him. If he wasn't an illegal immigrant he wouldn't have that problem. I'm not assuming anything. I'm saying these laws are necessary to prevent money laundering, and people who have come by their money legitimately can take legitimate steps if they need to move money between countries. That's what I did, when I had to move some funds to the US, (ie I didn't use cash) 'cause I wasn't trying to hide anything.

As andy points out, if you have a legitimate reason to be transport that much cash outside of the country you can generally find a legal way to make it available once you get wherever it is your going. Also carrying a briefcase of cash outside of the country (as some in organized crime used to do) is very suspicious in and of itself and could very well be grounds for further investigation. There's nothing saying you have to declare how much money you have in your wallet though... if it fits in your wallet you probably don't have much to worry about.

Like walking around downtown wearing a mask and carrying a gun.
Sure, you may be the most honest person in the world, but you may still have problems with the local police force.

Well that just ain't right. Wearing a mask and carrying a gun is my god-given right and I'll do it anywhere I want. Downtown or uptown. And don't even think of questioning me about it unless I actually start doing something wrong.

Well, if anyone would bother to do a little homework you'd find these laws about moving cash around have more to do with controlling the currency and etc. than they do with any crimes.

As far as the drug thing goes, keep in mind that currency control laws have been around for about 100 years while the 'war on drugs' is only about 25 years old.

So the thing with the drugs is just a handy excuse to continue invading your rights on behalf of bankers and the IRS.

Seems everyone else has forgotten the whole concept of cash and already surrendered their rights.
To the point someone ENTERING the country with a suitcase full of cash is questioned instead of greeted. But then I guess it's even better if you're a gov't to simply confiscate (read STEAL) and keep all of it rather than let the guy spread it to other people.

The bullshit has gone too far when you can't buy a car for cash or make a bank deposit without forms, or banks being allowed to charge a percentage-based fee to even accept cash deposits
