I am playing around with compiling/encoding the core or more complex & large php files for the site in an effort to speed things up.

Compiled scripts should run faster, but its sometimes hard to guage the impact.

In the last 30min i have ended several key files, people that have been on the site before then today and now, did you notice a speed increase?
Or does the site seem faster than it normaly is this time of day?

also please let me know if you find anything not working. I found that if I encode certain forum files, the forums break... dunno why... so hafta leave these out.

the forums definatly are starting to get slower during the day, at night they are fine. So thats why i'm trying to do as much as I can to speed things up.

After doing the script encoding, the front-page of cka loads way faster for me.

I think one of the things slowing down the forums alot is the stupid attachment mod. (mod that allows you to upload pictures on your posts). It includes a TON of php files on EVERY forum page, even when there is no need for them. like the forum index page, there is no need for the attachment mod files, because you cant see them there? The only page that should load the mod is on the viewtopic page. So this weekend im going to see if I can fix this bad coding in that mod.

Sorry if you were on the site between 3am - 4:30am PST today, the site/server was down.

I was doing a large upgrade of software. Upgraded PHP and MySQL to the newest versions. Anytime I do this it causes tons of problems with CKA or other sites I host, so I only update these things about once a year.

It was a substantial upgrade for the database/mysql from 4.x to 5.x

The good news is everything should be sorted out now, and hopefully the new versions offer some better performance. One MAJOR advantage is I can finally enable something called "eAccelerator" which caches compiled php scripts in memory, to make them much faster. Every time i tried enabling this before the forums would load blank pages. But after updating php&mysql it works now!

So you should notice a speed increase on the site, hopefully it will especially help during peak times.

There may be some things that don't work, I can't check the entire site, that takes a long time. So if you come across something not working, please let me know!

oh and I did add a tweak for the forums not to load the attachment mod files on pages its not needed :)

I was online and wondering what the heck happened :)

The newslinks don't seem to work..a blank window opens but no news..

Other than that everything seems to be just fine!

Okay, I just clicked the forum and got one of the worst possible ads you can get...

A "This page was Brought to you by....." page. You know with a "Click here to return to CKA"

THEY ARE EVILEVILEVILEVIL.

This a new feature for Non-Golds or jsut testing?

Please be the latter.

those have actualy been on for a couple weeks.

They can only show up maximum once per day for one person.
I am testing them, and that whole ad-network, so far the don't do so well... so they might not stay.

I dunno about others, but I definatly can notice an decrease in page load times on the site and forums

thanks for letting me know, I fixed this. was a security setting in mysql, probably was stopping many submission forms from not working.

There seems to be a larger problem with the "members online" block, it list "0" so its not counting the sessions. I will try and fix it.

I thought something was up last night. I wasn't on when it shut down but it got real slow, and that usually means Trevor under the hood tinkering with the carburetor.
Seem good now.

the members online should be fixed.

The site died about 30min ago, probably related to the eaccelerator.. hard to tell, could be a conflict with the new php as well. So it might be choppy for awhile until the bugs are sorted out.

I will be checking in often today to make sure its working.
