Canada's greatest guitarists..... hmmm there is quite a list of our best guitar players and I would concurr with some of them already mentioned..such as:

Alex Lifeson (or whatever his real name is?)
Randy Bachman
Liona Boyd
Lenny Breau
Frank Marino

But I would have to say Canada's current Best Guitar Player is Marc Atkinson BC Gypsy Jazz player...absolutely phenominal in the Django style, clean very artistic, and a virtuoso at this class.

In addition I had recent opportunity to see a great BC Blues guitar player, Mr Brandon Issaac Definitely a top notch blues guitar player and very entertaining.

Of course there is Bruce Cockburn whose acoustic playing is 2nd to none, very articulate, deadly accurate and always with an alternative style and beat that is exclusively his own style.

So there's a few to chew on and if you haven't heard of some these folks, you may be intrested to check them out. I'm sure I will think of a few more over the next few days.

OOps last post I forgot Jeff Healy on the list. The man was an incredibly gifted musician, his blues guitar playing was without a doubt Canada's very best, and the jazz album is definitely one of my all time favourites

I do agree with Joni Mitchell, though, because her guitar style is so different. Her tuning/playing style is very unique, and it's quite difficult for even the best transcribers to figure out how she'd play her songs.

Unique?
Her best album was "Songs Only Your Dog Can Hear"

Bobby Starr (b. Robert Schwab).

Bobby picked up a broken, out of tune guitar one evening before the band had to play. Nobody could get it in tune. When the set started, nobody could tell the guitar was a lemon since Bobby made it sing like an angel. An amazing guitarist.

I cna't think of any others that haven't been named.

Glad to see Lenny Breau on the list. He was a phenom. I think just for the Wow factor, I'd tip my hat to Jeff Healy. His solo at the end of his cover of "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" just makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up.

Alex Lifeson could shred with the best (e.g. Spirit of the Radio), but he also was an innovator with the "new wave" guitar sound (Signals etc).

For newer talent I really like that dude from Billy Talent. Great chops, innovative sound and hooks that hit you like a freight train! (Ian D'Sa--just looked it up).
