Well you must have been kicking around either Surrey or the Vancouver metal/punk scene at the time. I saw them a few times, got drunk with them at rehearsals and played in a band with their original drummer.

Damn, is that ever a topic for me!

One of these bands (VdGG) isn't really "obscure", but they're definitely forgotten, and my favorite band so they deserve the publicity. :)

I'd have had thousands of other bands to pick from, but decided to go for 2 Canadian bands that fit the intent of the thread better : they definitely are obscure.

You can give them all a listen over on these places :

Van Der Graaf Generator : http://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=343

Pollen : http://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=909

Talisma : http://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=751

Very different types of music there.

TYR - http://www.tyr.net/

Loco - http://www.loco-metal.com/

All very different music too.

Witchs Hammer--definitely. To tell you the truth, I don't remember much. Occassionally venturing out to Vancouver for a show at the New York threatre to see line-ups of about ten bands and being hammered by the second band. Good times.

Byron, from Caustic, went on to do soem neat stuff and the drummer they got after (Bob Wagner) has done pretty well too--Econoline Crush and Shocore.

The Black Keys - Two guys from Oklahoma. Great almost bluesy sound.

I'm sad to not have seen The Eels on this list. Go, check them out. Do it.

And of course The Moldy Peaches. They remind me of The White Stripes.

Blue_Nose Blue_Nose:
Jill Barber - yound folk artist from Nova Scotia (this album's a little easier for me to get ahold of). Very nice sound, and she's been doing very well.

Ah yes, and if we're going to mention Jill Barber we should also mention David Myles.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FDgo8p1Ai9g ... Alan Jefferies is a buddy of mine, awesome guitarist.

I will add...

The Helio Sequence... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QIicqULYhGw

And not all that obscure but...

Nick Drake... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t5HsQsmJsRY
