You can make your own beer but if you want stronger than 12-14% then you need distillation. My brother in law and I made a reflex still to make "brandy" out of wine making residue. It was a first attempt and harsh as hell but close to 40% for a first pass distillation. .. now you see why I don't have a problem with folks growing their own pot.

lol, made shine by constantly re-distilling what was once just sugar, yeast, and water mixed together. Something like 90% alcohol content. o.O
