Using religion as an excuse to hate... I think I've seen this before.

So it's okay to bench someone for taking a knee during the anthem but not okay to bench someone for not wearing a pride flag on pride day for the team.

Nice double standard Ben.

Just trade the idiot to a team that doesn't care about anything like Boston.

Not all religion preaches hate. Just the ones who selectively read parts of their sacred texts.

Also, there is another side. He does eventually have to go home, and Russia is intentionally extremely gay-phobic.

Where Ukraine has their own LGBT based Battalion. :)

Did you expect he would be morally consistent?

Oh and fire the coach for having that double standard while they're at it.

I'm sure he'd have no problem wearing a shirt with a nice big Z on it though.

Assumes facts not in evidence. There are many Russians who don't approve of Russias' current government stance. And many of the ones who do approve are the successful victims of relentless government misinformation.

Provorov may indeed side with Russian Government actions, but I can't find any hint that he's voiced it.

Another example of a religion that only reads parts of their sacred texts.

And Russians should absolutely rise up. That is the only way repressive regimes have been replaced in their history.

The down side is that what replaces them is often worse. :(

I hope he appreciates living in a country where he has the freedom to choose whether or not to participate in an event such as this one. If he was in his home country and the tables were turned in the other direction a choice such as this one would result in far worse repercussions than he is experiencing now.

Dumb to have mentioned it.
He took the day off for a personal issue
No more needed to be said, no issue would've come of it.

I don't think anything should have been said to begin with. It's his right to subscribe to organized hate, if that pleases him. He wouldn't like to hear my diatribes on what should happen to Russia over the next 3 generations either.

Obviously he doesn't. Just by eveyones on here's reaction. You don't respect his choice thus think he sould be punished for just NOT showing support for something he doesn't agree with.

To me you all are sounding kind of hypocritical. OH he didn't do what we wanted him to lets punish him. Yes we support diversity as long as you agree with us if not you are a HATER. That is the message you are displaying.

Think on it some.

If he doesn't respect the way others are, and chooses to pass that off as a religious choice, why should he be be given the same consideration he chooses to not give to others? No one called for any punishment, but bad behaviour should be called out. Not like he took a knee during the anthem though.

That modern Christianity does make allowances for their LGBT members, because they realize that if people are made in Gods image, that includes more than just straight and white, is lost on the Orthodox church who are firmly set in the 1300s. And Russians in particular, as authoritarian regimes need their scapegoats.

And he (assuming here) reverts to the old testament; that says homosexuality is bad, you can own people, and if you wear cloth made of two kinds of thread you should be stoned to death. Or does he pick and choose which offend him?

So who would be the hypocrite? ;)

Everyone . . . ?
