I stopped using French because this isn't an office party and I don't have anyone to impress, right Samuel?

Seriously though, I more or less stopped using French because I don't want to discourage others from participating because they have trouble with the language. It seems like the francophones have no trouble conversing in English(no more than the anglophones, at least! ).

Anyway, I think it would be a good idea to have all-French threads to address the problems you raise. We could have discussions in French and offer pointers to anyone who's French needs work. It's probably as easy as that.

Gaulois, Vive is designed to appeal to both french-speaking and english-speaking Canadians.

Personally I'd like to see discussion in both official languages. I don't think we need separate sections. Do we really need more segregation? Besides, if Quebecois and Canadian views are nearly as polarized as some would claim (Delenda ) then it's better that we try to understand each other.

I think if we follow some basic rules, the we can communicate in an inclusive way and still get our points across:

1. When posting a new thread, make sure the Subject is in the same language as the actual post.

2. Try to make your postings more clear and concise (regardless of which language you post in). This allows people communicating in their secondary language to follow your logic with ease.

3. It's fine to respond in english to a french post (or vice versa)

4. But if you are able to, stick to the language in the Subject line. This way, even people with minimal french skills, such as myself, can participate in french discussions.

What do y'all think??

I think it would be wonderful if we could each write our postings in our own preferred language. My experience however so far on Vive is that most English speaking participants disconnect at that point. So in the name of goodwill, we French speaking people drift to English.

Asking Vive members in a poll something like this would be extremely useful:

"Tell us how your comfort level reading (&interested in reading) French:
1 - Highly comfortable
2 - Moderately comfortable
3 - It is a real battle
4 - Forget it

This assumes that Vive French speaking participants are pretty much a non-issue as far as bilingualism goes.

I find these "francoes" to be quite "chatty" and the threads they are on too long. Is there a Guiness record to break for political wackoes?

Why not use the chatter log front page facility? It forces concision and might increase civility which BTW seems to have improved over the last week.

Je pense que les francos pourraient prendre le controle linguistique a travers le "clavardage".
On controle deja le nom du site. Dear anglos: never mind previous sentences in French, I was just babbling away.

Qu'est que je ne ferais pas pour le bien collectif...
(Translation = what wouldn't I do for the collective good?). A true politician.
