We're sitting here chatting tonight and the subject of men referring to cars, boats, and pretty much anything else that involves some sort of horse power, is referred to as "she". Why? The answer I got was, "Because we do". Now I'm curious. Is there an actual reason, known origin? How did this come to be?

i typed the question into google and found a couple of "answers" and although this one refers to ships, i liked it the best: Why is She Called She? "A boat is called a she because there's always a great deal of bustle around her...because there's usually a gang of men around...because she has waist and stays...because she takes a lot of paint to keep her looking good...because it's not the initial expense that breaks you, it's the upkeep...because she is all decked out...because it takes a good man to handle her right...because she shows her topside, hides her bottom and, when coming into port, always heads for the buoys." ................George Moses in Falmouth, Massachusetts source

Cars, boats, guns, anything with power behind them are "sweet". I don't know about you, but when I think of something sweet I tend to think of something feminine, therefore.......she!

The reason men call everything mechanical "she", goes far beyond what's been expounded on here. It's actually quite simple when you think about it. Long before the age of political correctness, if a guy were to start calling his boat, car or motorcycle "him" he would have been labelled gay in a heartbeat, punched out, and had all his beer drinking buddies bail on him, so it was better to be safer than sorry and call everything "She".... just in case.
