I just bought a handheld GPS Unit today and while I was searching for goodies on the web I came across something called GeoCaching.

It's pretty much a hi-tech hide and seek treasure hunt. The account was free and it seems to be an active activity all over the world. You find items then leave items and go back to the website and log your findings.

Here's the web site that I'm on:

GeoCaching

I'm going to get started on trying to find some of these goodies.

Geocaching - "you are the search engine"

Get the kids out too, they'll love it. The treasure is usually garbage - you'll prefer the hunt, the kids will love the trash.

"Seems to be active"? 200,000 caches around the world - out you go!

I'm into this too Bossdog. Look for "Tattooed Superstar". I've got 3 caches hidden, 1 in Wainwright, and two in the Cold Lake area.

Well I'm in Pa so I won't be searching Wainwright anytime soon. I just entered the coordinates for my first search and I'm on my way. Once I get an idea of what the setup is like I'll start leaving caches.

Your first three caches are probably within 500m of your front door.

The one I'm going to right now is across the highway and down a dirt road on the cliffside of a river (about 2 mi). Whoever said that army kit wouldn't come in handy after release! I'll let you guys know how it turns out when I get back.

I FOUND MY FIRST CACHE!

There were some neat little things in the ammo box like a paperback, some coins, a colouring book and a british beanie baby. I traded the book for a magic fish face cloth.

It reminds me of our old GPS training exercises in the military only my GPS is about 10 times smaller and more accurate.

Just make sure you fill in the log - both in the cache and online.

I just found the second one I was looking for today. It was in a very well kept and well groomed park. I searched for about 30 minutes once I got there. It ended up being inside the base of a street light. Very sneaky. I took a lanyard from Virgina (for my new GPS toy) and left another magic fish towel. There was a Travel Bug in there from a school in Florida. Beofre I move, I am going to check back to see if it's still there so I can move it a great distance when I leave.

I'm hooked.

You can check geocaching.com to see if it's still there. You can see where it's been and what it's destination is. There was a travel bug of a Hot Wheels Double decker bus sent from here to London, England, via London, Ontario. It's surprising how fast they travel.

The caches are everywhere. Some are under water, some are reachable only by kayak, some are in malls, stores. Just be wary of the 'muggles' - be ready to pretend your GPS is a cell phone

I picked up a travel bug from my cache in Cold Lake with intentions of moving it further South to Drumheller before I left on tour. We ended up not going, and when I got overseas, I found the little guy in my backpack. I emailed the owner, and took some pics of him in the desert, on a barge..etc. I brought the missus over to Thailand for our HLTA, and passed it onto her to return to Canada. Once we got back together, we tracked his travel, and he had flown all the way around the world. The owner was ecstatic, and I still get emails from him.
