Eisensapper Eisensapper:
Apparently the Americans claim they have worked all the bugs out, if thats true or not it remains to be seen. I also highly doubt the left wing will let anything like that happen, they are already raising a stink about whats going on up there at the moment.

I read recently that it’s been tested 5 times and only hit the target or got close to the target twice. It was also a target that was launched in a precise area and a precise time and didn’t have anything like a multiple warhead. 2/5 isn’t good especially when they knew where and when it would be. This has been going on for decades and isn’t even close to working but the Politian’s with defense industry jobs in their districts don’t care and will continue to bush the big pink elephant.

You're not paying for it so your point is????

That's bullshit and you know it.

You know for a fact it will come in to play the moment we want to negotiate trade terms or anything to do with the military be it new transports or tanks to refueling our navy at sea. Anything that costs that much must be used as an economic chip to recoup your losses.

If the missile uses multiple warheads, deploys decoys and the attacker is so rude not to announce the GPS co-ordinates what good is this system then?

The missile defenses proposed for the Czech Republic and Poland do not cost anywhere near $1 trillion dollars. Dial that down 90% and you'll come to the actual figure.

Scape Scape:
We need missile defence about as much as we need asteroid defence. That is to say not at all for the cost/benefit ratio is makes the whole issue moot. It's 21st century snake oil for militarists, nothing more.

No doubt.

First it was battleships in the early 20th, then aircraft carriers, nukes, high tech fighters, etc. Every military is always searching for the next big thing, and the leading power of the day wastes massive sums on it to find out it doesn't work nearly as well as predicted.

...and you are worried, why? It's American tax payers flipping the bill, not Canadian.

That’s what the scientific community has been saying but the loads of money going from the public’s pocket to the defense industry has been drowning that out.

You buy your little girl a barbie doll you have to buy Ken and the sport car, vacation set, house...

That's how the US came up with the 1.2 Trillion price tag to begin with.

That's the full-on missile defense proposal you're quoting. Which is not what we're discussing here.

We're discussing the program for just Poland and the Czech Republic.

Oh, no you don't Bart. What you are trying to limit this to is the tip of the iceberg that is missile defence.

Just in:

Medvedev is warning his country may respond to a U.S. missile shield in Europe through military means

The cost will be very high indeed.

Again, why all the upset since you say this doesn't work?

Russia has to realize that it is not a "big dog" anymore.

Eastern Europe will continue to gravitate towards the west (US, NATO, EU) and away from Russia. Russia has no right to use these countries as "buffers" or turn them into puppet states.

Russia is free to try to solve this "problem" with military means, but sooner or later they WILL bite off more than they can chew, and someone will hit them back hard.
