PARIS - The Canadian government formally expressed its objection Wednesday to France's plans to go to the United Nations, claiming thousands of square kilometres of potentially lucrative seabed beyond Canada's 200-mile (370-kilometre) zone.

I am sure we do object, just as we object to people 'claiming' the arctic however, it isn't so much about whom it belongs to as to who can put shit up there to claim it.

So far, our 450 reserve troops and 1500 rangers just don't cut it. We have almost zero capability in the high arctic so...either shit or get off the pot.

It is amazing how quickly previous agreements can get tossed out the window with a payment to the right person, besides it isnt like the UN is going to do anything anyway.

Which is why cuting the islands off entirely shouldn't cause too much fuss.

Well, I think perhaps we need to assert ourselves in our own territorial waters, put a frigate or two in the general vicinity of St-Pierre-Miquelon, and conduct "safety inspections" on all the ships from St-Pierre-Miquelon that traverse through Canadian waters

The territorial waters are the same as the fishing boundaries: 200 mile limit.

We would be well within the law to do either inspections are an all out commercial cut-off. it wouldn't be an official blockade or inspections fo ships heading to french territory, only an inspection and possible blockade of ships deemd suspicious.

And while frigates would make an awesome presence, to have full control you'd need more vessels. Finally the Kingston class cna do it's job. keep 4-6 in the area at any one time. :P
