Yes, that's the strange thing about Pinochet: unlike most other dictators who people are genuinely happy to see go, Pinochet did have the genuine support of a significant part of the population, especially with his law-and-order and economic policies.

Yeah, I'm not too surprised at Trudeau being in the lead, but keep in mind that he was in power for so long that it seems like he would inevitably come up with at least something good. I would have to say that Pearson, who accomplished so much in just four years or Diefenbaker in 6. An interesting p...

Unlike Myanmar, though, What Trudeau did was a temporary measure done in response to the situation, not a permanent new military regime, like in Myanmar (note:according to hid profile, Light_Plutonium is workinjg for the UN in Myanmar). Once the crisis was over, he removed the troops there. Also, ab...

So kidnapping 1 guy and blowing up a few mailbox justified putting 25% of your population under the war measure act?. no, because it was more than just kidnapping one guy and blowing up a few mailboxes. it was blowing up the stock exchange, kidnapping 2 people and murdering one of the kidnapped. Fu...

Yes, they were released when the threat was OVER. I believe that Trudeau's actions were justified in keeping terrorism in check at the time, as is holding suspected terrorists currently. Hmmm...I wonder what reaction it would cause if someone asked Bush how far he would take things in the war on ter...

I think Trudeau got the most votes in part because he was in office for such a long time. I deliberately chose to keep other earlier prime ministers out of the poll, because I felt that it was best to limit it to those whose memories ar fairly fresh in our minds. By the way, did any other PM have a ...

to be honest, Harper looks like he has potential, but I think it's too early to call him the best

Who voted for St. Laurent? From what I read, he was sort of a "caretaker prime minister" who kind of just sat back and relaxed during the post-WWII boom.

Did you actually write Kissinger as saying something, or is that just random scribbles?

leader is a PM for Canada over 40 years ago. What a sad country. Actually, I think it's the same in the US-Reagan/Clinton/Bush Jr are very divisive, looking back on things Bush Sr. was pretty good, Ford seemed OK but had some problems with airplane stairs, Nixon was actually I think a very good pre...

You know, between Chretien's "a proof is a proof" speech, and Bush's "the blackouts were caused because we don't have enough power to power the power of the power plants", I had the feeling that a debate between the two would either be hilarious or cause the apocalypse. Anyway, I...

Yeah, I'd probably go with Dief the Chief as well. Re:Chretien, I meant fourth, and have edited it.

Who do you think was Canada's best prime minister in recent times (1950-present)? I think Pearson, Trudeau, and Diefenbaker are the top three, with Chretien coming a close fourth. One thing that I find hard to compare is time in office- Trudeau had something like 16 years and Chretien 10, while Pear...

hmmmmm...maybe we need an updated version that includes Martin and Harper. I don't know what the deal is with Dief's swirly eyes, though.
