You know if they actually allowed Cdns to have an opinion, a referendum on this exact topic would be an ideal way to start off a political catalyst. A great way to get rid of A. Clarkson whose imitation of the Queen is lame at best. I wonder what dead Queen she will have lunch with this year?

The money could be better spent elsewhere. They just reported in the Calgary Sun today that Calgary is on the hook for these authentic royally approved flags that are going to cost taxpayers $220,000. The monarchy is Canada's oldest institution. It predates Confederation. It is also probably the only institution which can unite Canadians from coast to coast to coast. It transcends politics. It transcends regionalism. It transcends ethnicity. The fact that the Sovereign and her family live abroad in this sense helps our unity, rather than weaken it.

I am sick and tired of hearing Canadians talk about how we must get rid of the monarchy so as to be a modern state. Have Canadians no sense of who they are and where they have come from?

Immigrants to this country should resist calling for changes to our constitution. No one forced them to come here. If they find the monarchy so offensive, they shouldn't come. That applies to people from all parts of the world.

Your kidding right? Look at the current political situation. Canada has to be one of the only countries with "loose" ties. The West wasnt even considered during Confederation.

Whether or not your sick and tired, people are entitled to their own opinions. My opinion is that WE Canadians should get rid of the Queen. Still sick and tired? I am a Historian, I know PERFECTLY well where we came from and WHO I am. We dont need a monarchy for that. What we need is our own history. With the Queen coming to Saskatchewan and Alberta, I personally could care less. Then again, thats just my opinion.

Perhaps it is time in this country to hold a huge referendum.. Call it referendum day in Canada (since we don't have any hockey) or at least form a committe that could write lots of letters (cause as Canadians thats what we do)
Hold a rererendum. On whether we need the monarchy. Hold a referendum on the governer generals place in Canada. Hold a referendum on the quebec situation as a country yes or no (do they stay).
Hold a referendum on what to do with the 93% of italians the other 7% can stay. Hold a referendum on newfoundland.. why not no one asked us back in 1949.
Hold a referendum as to whether on not we will accept the NHLPA and the NHL back into Canada.

Sorry just a poke at humour. see how carried away this could get. we are 1 country that happens to belong to a commonwealth of other countries under the monarchy of a Queen. Remeber God save our gracious Queen. Yes perhaps there are a few things that need to be changed but last time I checked we weren't paying taxes to the Queen no taxation without representation ..she is just a figurehead.

So what if you're an historian.

I have a BA in history, Canadian history, and an LLB. I even won a prize in law school in constitutional law.

The fact is that no one can accuse our Sovereign of favouring one part of the country over another. Furthermore, not coming from any particular part of the country, makes her neither a Westerner, a Central Canadian, a Quebeber, or a Maritimer or Newfoundlander, etc. She is simply Canadian. That cannot be said of the governor-general or the prime minister.

A lot of regional tension exist because we so often have to factor in regionalism and ethnicity when filling our offices, elected or otherwise. Our monarchy, and more specifically the fact that our present Royal Family reside abroad, allows the highest office in the land to be above regionalism and the ethnic tensions which befuddle our country.
