JOHN WARD

OTTAWA (CP) - A doctor's "gruesome" account of injuries he found on Canadian journalist Zahra Kazemi only reinforces Canada's belief that the woman was murdered in Iran, Foreign Affairs Minister Pierre Pettigrew said Thursday.

"We know that she was murdered and not the victim of an accident," the minister said in Toronto. Canada has not given up on the case and will enlist international support against Iran, Pettigrew added. "We will be continuing to work with the international community, put the pressure on Iran so that they render justice," he said.

Stockwell Day, the Tory foreign affairs critic, suggested the recall of Canada's ambassador and the imposition of sanctions, but Pettigrew wasn't enthusiastic. Canada needs an ambassador in Tehran to keep the pressure on, he said.

"I don't believe much in individual or bilateral sanctions but this is the kind of thing that we can discuss with the international community."

Alexa McDonough, the NDP foreign affairs critic, said the government must pursue "new measures" to see justice done.

"It must be open with Canadians and Ms. Kazemi's family as to the nature of these measures, be they direct measures with Iran, within the United Nations or both," she said.

Refugee doctor Shahram Azam, formerly with the Iranian military, spoke with clinical coolness at an Ottawa news conference earlier Thursday, methodically listing a tally of bruises, broken bones and other injuries he found on Kazemi. These could only have been the result of the deliberate torture and rape, he said.

Kazemi, 54, an Iranian-born dual citizen, was arrested after taking pictures outside a prison in Tehran in June 2003.

I must be honest I never saw one Canadian post about this topic. Do you just act like it does not exist? Dont you think you shold honor and stick up for your fellow citizens? Or pretending like this never happend and it will go away?

Good question NYC. I suppose it just never came up.

But since you're asking...

Fisrt off, we recall our ambassador again. Then if Iran has any diplomats in Canada, send his back. Then put a travel ban on Iran for all Canadian citizens and vice-versa so no Iranian will be allowed to visit Canada.

Then wait and see. If iran hasn't gotten the hint by then, then some sort of sanctions regime should be imposed.

I dont get it do you have it out for me? Cause people call me every name in the book and you say nothing. I state a fact and you get upset at me. Yeah I did not post this unpurpose for two weeks. I waited two weeks to see in anyone would. But not one Canadian or American for that fact did. In other US forums I belong to there where full length forums on this.

So am I upset that no one brought this up yes!
So maybe thats why I sound upset.

Like all things in life, it's not the fact that counts, it's how it is relayed. Whenever you relay a fact, you manage to insult and belittle every Canadian. It's all in the tone of the questions. Instead of your questions, you could have simply asked,

"What do you think about this situation? Do you think the Canadian government is handling the situation properly, and if not, why?"

Remember that it isn't the Canadian people who get a say in what happens in this case, it's the Federal Government. The Federal Government makes the sole decision on foreign affairs because that area is where normal citizens such as us have no informed opinion (i.e. we're not privy to most of the facts of the case, only what the media relays to us).

All Canadians must simply trust the wisdom of the Federal Government in issues of foreign affairs and the utilization of the armed forces, as the government holds all of the facts, not nit-picked ones which the media has.

I think it's that statement that upset Canadaka. That's a really accusatory thing to say and there are many other ways you could have said it that wouldn't have been as caustic.

But you're right, it should have been brought up. Thank you for doing so.

Newfie scott

You can vote your Govermant out if does not do the peoples will in essence. For example Jimmy Carter got booted in 1980 mostly for foriegn policy mishaps.

And to be honest I found it amazing how not one Canadian brought this up.

I feel Canada should do what Xerxes said and follow a much tougher line on Iran if it is going to kill its citizens.

I agree, we should take a firmer stance. Iran is making a dangerous move in such heated times...

This is a good article though. TEHRAN - Iran won't allow an international team of forensic scientists to examine the body of Zahra Kazemi as Canada has demanded, an Iranian official said Tuesday.

INDEPTH: Zahra Kazemi

Zahra Kazemi
"Such a demand does not conform with Iranian laws or international regulations," Jamal Karimirad, a spokesperson for Iran's judges, said at a media briefing.
