Hardships come in all shapes and sizes. The loss of a spouse can be a bump in the road or the collapse of the family.

We opted to be poor and have the missus stay at home. No regrets. Well, not many.

Most times, spousal support is given to give the woman a chance to get some training or schooling

Alimony should be illegal, IMO it isn't far removed from slavery.

Once the two are divorced one should have zero obligation to the other.

People seem to have this view that women are living in the lap of luxury while their poor exes are struggling to make ends meet because of unfair support payments. The fact is... if the woman is getting a huge cheque, it's because the man is making a lot of money.

Exactly though, why should she get a huge check just becuase HE is working his ass off.

8 years is time enough to get schooling or training... but nothing makes up for lost time.

What lost time?. You can pick up a job tommorow starting at 18 bucks WITHOUT a stitch of training. Go to TELUS , a brand new worker starts 1t 18 min.

I would like to see some of you men try to live on what I make each month, including child support. I think you'd wake up real quick.

After paying you have our check we do live on what you make.

HE is making big money because he's had years to get where he is today. Years of training, schooling, and experience.

Doing what? That's close to what I'm making right now, with some experience and a year's worth of schooling.

Half? What sort of dream world do you live in? There are charts outlining how much support a non-custodial parent must pay, based on province of residence, income and the number of children. I don't think anyone is paying anywhere close to half.

Feel free to prove me wrong though.

Why not just find another guy (rich) and get knocked up, that would suit most stay at home mom's lives.

So according to you how much alimony is paid (which is separate from child support) depends on custody and number of children even though child support is likely already being paid out?

Sound a little like double dipping to anyone else here?

I am not planning on it. But if my wife and I ever got divorced I would give her everything we have and start over myself. I would also expect to pay for her living expenses until she either remarries or is suitably employed for 2 to 3 years, making enough to live better than just surviving.
I can't see doing any less for messing up our lives whether her fault or mine. Unless of course the old nasty fidelity snake raised it's ugly head. Then I would say I would have to do some serious thinking.

I'm not sure how to respond to that, hwacker.

Why, if that’s the job "you" choose you just need to find another employer :-)

And before you get your thong in a knot that was directed at all moms.
