No, but he was pretty damn crooked. And so was his successor, Rousseff. I think at one point last year, five most senior people in the Brazilian government were under investigation for corruption.
On Netflix is a show "The Mechanism" that is a true crime retelling of busting corruption in Brazil. Pretty amazing how it's not only accepted but entrenched deep in the culture for more than 100 years. And it went very deep into the government.
It's going to be a long uphill road to clean it up.
Nobody’s going to clean it up. Certainly not this jackbooted thug. Each government is more or less as corrupt as the one before or after. Accusations of corruption are just a convenient excuse for western countries to selectively punish certain governments that don’t bow down to multinational corporations.
When it’s a brutal corrupt right wing regime like pinochet or Fujimori or this guy they say “ oh you have to let the free markets work and give it 4 or 5 generations” or “oh that’s their own intenal matter, it shouldn’t stop is from doing business with them!” But when it’s a government that wants even a sliver of the environmental or workplace protections we enjoy here, suddenly it’s zero tolerance and pretending even the smallest irregularities are unacceptable and unheard of.
