The soil in the rainforest will support 10 years of agriculture at best. Looking forward to seeing the birth of the great South American desert

Brings back a question I asked about five or six years ago:

Should we go to war to protect the Amazon rainforest?

No, but he was pretty damn crooked. And so was his successor, Rousseff. I think at one point last year, five most senior people in the Brazilian government were under investigation for corruption.

On Netflix is a show "The Mechanism" that is a true crime retelling of busting corruption in Brazil. Pretty amazing how it's not only accepted but entrenched deep in the culture for more than 100 years. And it went very deep into the government.

It's going to be a long uphill road to clean it up.

Nobody’s going to clean it up. Certainly not this jackbooted thug. Each government is more or less as corrupt as the one before or after. Accusations of corruption are just a convenient excuse for western countries to selectively punish certain governments that don’t bow down to multinational corporations.

When it’s a brutal corrupt right wing regime like pinochet or Fujimori or this guy they say “ oh you have to let the free markets work and give it 4 or 5 generations” or “oh that’s their own intenal matter, it shouldn’t stop is from doing business with them!” But when it’s a government that wants even a sliver of the environmental or workplace protections we enjoy here, suddenly it’s zero tolerance and pretending even the smallest irregularities are unacceptable and unheard of.

Oxygen does not exist naturally on Earth. Plants manufacture it for us. The Amazon accounts for most of that oxygen.

10 years is a long time without oxygen.

You know, that's exactly what the documentary is about, right? Police cleaning up the corruption?

Yes. I do. The Amazon are the lungs of the planet. No part should be cut down. Its not because I watched "Fern Gully" too many times as child, but because a. the ground is borderline infertile, farmers only get 10 or so seasons from the ground before what little nutrients that exist in it are spent; and b. because it could seriously impair the planet's ability to scrub CO2 from the atmosphere.

Set the forest aside. Do not develop it.

They’re just catching yesterday’s crooks to make room for today’s crooks . I doubt they’re having any lasting effect. Too soon to say at least.
