Once every 50 years isn't good enough for the government to invest in more snow ploughs.

once every 50 years? ha. snow ploughs are good for any snow not just lots of it. So its better to shut down schools and places of work costing lord knows how much instead of buying ploughs to make sure it doesnt happen? Soory you have bad logic there

The plows are bought seperate, they use the same trucks in the summer for hauling gravel so all they have to do is put the blade on and hook up the hydraulics. We probably have more pick ups with blades on here in town then you do in all of Vancouver.

Last year at this time I was jamming 2 tires off a 50 tonne rock truck in the bucket of a loader to plow my ice road.

I recall the busses used to run all winter on chains when I was younger. Now they hardly run at all but cost far more. Good job Translink/Bus co.

In our defense, the forcast was for rain last night. Moreover, in Vancouver these last few weeks we have gotten more snow than anyone can remember. Add to that we haven't gotten a serious winter in at least a decade so cut us some slack m'kay?

sorry, you live in canada and therfore have no fall back by saying. well we havent had snow like this or (random snow related excuse here). ITS CANADA!!!!

You sound like one of those ignorant Americans Rick Mercer likes to talk with.

lol how so? Cause im right about living in canada. By the same idea we might as well just use cheaper supplies for buildings cause we "never" get tornadoes or "Hurricanes" here so why build to withstand such things.

We get these heavier than normal snowstorms about every ten years for as long as I can remember. But this is the worst I’ve ever seen out here. The cost of shutting down the entire Lower Mainland for these kinds of weather events is ridiculous. The equipment should be available and when something like this happens, run it all 24 hours a day until traffic can move again.

I’m in south Surrey where the elevation is just enough to get more than our fair share of snow when it happens. We couldn’t even get out for two days and it hasn’t improved much yet. Of course the rain warnings we’re getting now have us all worrying about floods instead of snow now.

There may not be global warming in the works, but the weather is certainly changing.

The public schools werent closed due to snow...only the private schools and places like SFU (which is atop of Burnaby Mountain)
