Bibbi Bibbi:
Actually those people who were brought up in an all white society by parents who had no preconceptions or attitudes to racism would lead to a lack of racist attitudes from the young one.

Needless to say, I suspect that this is rather rare, but it describes how I grew up.

I grew up in an all white society too, which is weird, since my grandmother is 100% Indonesian
All people I knew were just all white. If they were purple, it would have been fine too...

Yes, I remember when I saw my first non-white in school, my only reaction was "different" with absolutely no attitude or connotations positive or negative.

It's funny how different prejudices develop and sustain in different places. I've noticed that areas with native reserves near by are more racist towards natives. You'd think exposure to different cultures would reduce racism, but the opposite seems to be true. My parents are Scottish. My dad grew up hating Catholics and that tension between Protestant and Catholic is as strong as ever in Britain. For whatever reaason, religious hatred seems a much smaller issue in Canada than elsewhere in the world. Maybe us 2nd generation Canadians are not picking up our parents' prejudices. Maybe that's a hopeful observation that, someday, we can all get along despite our differences.

Just because "they" may be racists isn't a valid reason for "us" to be.

------------------------------------------------------------

As for white racism, I have no doubt that it is pervasive - this thread alone offers a good glimpse into it.
