Canada’s border security or lack of, did it contribute to the death of the four RCMP officers at Mayerthorpe, Alta?

Here’s two quotes from today’s papers.

The Toronto Sun, 22 Mar 05
AN ESTIMATED 1,600 cars managed to "blow by" Canadian customs booths to get into the country illegally last year, according to a government report. As well, there are at least 200 unguarded roads connecting Canada and the U.S. that operate on the honour system where travelers are supposed to report to the nearest border crossing.

The Globe and Mail, 22 Mar 05.

“Most of his guns had been smuggled into Canada illegally from the United States, according to Mr. Roszko's friends.”

An "honour system" at the border? Anybody see a problem here?

Terrorist and illegal immigrants please sign in at the Customs Post. We will be back after the May 24 weekend?

We don't let them in! "They" get into Canada the same way they are still getting into the US and Mexico and anywhere in the Western World. Illegal immigrants, float, boat, swim, dig, dive, fly etc... into North America practically in the same ways they did before 911. Terrorists do it with a little more style. Money talks or even dreams of the western world walks. Terrorists have it (money and direct flights). Illegal immigrants can get it .The Billions of dollars spent on security, the billions of dollars of BioID cards etc.. are a show. It is all part of the government administrivia to keep the peons mesmerized. Homeland security and the North American equivalent is just a farce. Their deeds are displayed relentlessly on TV. This, so called beefed up security is Marx's "opiate of the people" for the twentieth first century. Keep them scared and they'll be happy the world's greatest oxymoron. If the government can advertise that it is doing something then something is happening. The same thing flies with Canada's gun control (it is the opiate for Canadian urbanites with gun control. It keeps them scared that there are guns out there as well as keeping 90% of the Canadian population, who are urbanites happy). Unfortunately way too many Westerners use the TV as a sole medium for imformation. Unfortunately 1% of the world's population have the all the of the post secondary education and that population is located in the Western world. However, we do not use this education for what it taught us to do - create balanced and sound decisions by acquiring knowledge through a variety of view points-. We get so camped on leftest, rightest, left wing screwballs and right wing nut bars, centre and pinko commies that we forget to view the world with balance. Until their is balance in the world terrorist will still threaten Western targets - Illegal immigrants will still gain entrance to fortress US and bungalow Canada whether the two helicopters that flew out of Plattsburg, NY's Home Security base this afternoon are there or not.

well put Hist. I also find it very funny when yanks or their conservative bootlickers talk about letting terrorists in. Given Bin laden was armed and trained by the CIA and saddam was their golden boy for a while it seems to me they are their own worst enemies in these things.

I think Roszko was a time-bomb waiting to happen and if he didn't get his guns from the States, he would've gotten other guns by other means.

However, without his automatic weapons, maybe those four boys would still be alive today.

No. A nut bar killed four RCMP officers. It was a special kind of nut bar though; a kind that most people in law enforcement love to hate and hate to love. The guy had to be a rat. I've known a few of the beasts and he exactly fits the pattern. He buys a little, sells a little, grows a little, steals a little and poaches when he can. He goes on about how macho he is and how much he hates the cops, but he's on the line to Crime Stoppers every day and every time the police try to take him down if he can't get out of it by ratting out a few of his friends on the spot he manages to do it later through his lawyer. He raises ugly dogs and some other foul beast, either snakes, spiders or something equally nasty. He gets a welfare cheque and has a brood of dirty children one of which is always out of school for fighting or having lice. If he lives in a house there are cars and parts thereof all over the yard. The police think they have him tamed, but they're young and stupid and one day he'll take a few of them out. Yeah, he lives just down the street from all of us, and the next time he kills we'll all be just as surprised-not.

Funny how right-wingers constantly complain about supposedly lax border controls that allow terrorists and illegal immigrants into the country and are so resistant to marijuana legalisation because it'll upset the States yet go strangely quiet when anyone mentions the hundreds of guns being smuggled north. I wonder how many Canadian lives would've been saved if the US enforced stricter gun control.

Oh and just for the record I opposesd the gun registry.

Ya know, everytime I hear this crap about gun control, I just want to scream. There should only be four laws on the books reguarding guns.

1: No one can buy a firearm if they have a criminal record involving violent crime.
2: No assault weapons ( no one needs them for anything)
3: 10 years prison time for smugling guns into Canada
4: 20 years prison time, no parrole possible, for the use of a firearm in a crime

Thats it, this registry crap is just mental masturbation for the law makers trying to make it look like they're trying to do something about violent crime. It's been a huge waste of tax dollars that could have gone to more police or something that would have actually been a benefit to Canadians. According to the government, even if you had no criminal record or ever commited a crime, your a criminal now because you don't register your guns, what a crock of crap.

A nut job killed 4 RCMP, period.

Yeah look at his record he shouldnt have been out of Jail, it stupid its always "More gun control" or the border!! look at his record he shouldnt have been free. we need enforcement of are laws (and more time for repeat criminals)

It makes me sick saw a CBC thing and it takes RCMP atleast a year to get a open and shut case against a child molester and they'll do less time then that!!!!!!!!!!! one guy got 2 months FTF!! is with that!?!? And child porn takes longer and its hard to get Crown to do the case because they'll have to review the evidence. thats sick there failing us when we need them the most
