Yeah well! After 911 the FAA required all aircraft going into Dulles required armed guards aboard. The LIBRANO's response to that was:

That is too radical for Canada (the LPC).

Besides these mystical, magical, evil devises will corrupt our border people's minds and turn them all into mass, serial killers.

Good deal. Now the Canadian border guards can get themselves invited to the Border Patrol shooting events. Those boys tend to eat very, very well. Even if your people suck at the competitions they'll still enjoy a fabulous meal!

A highschool friend of an old university buddy of mine is a border guard (windsor). I gurantee you if you met this guy you would not be encoured by him carrying a firearm. He very arrogantly puts himeself (and all customs agents) on a high pedestal far above the people crossing the border. Apparently a belief commonly held.

Giving arrogant people who can make your life hell on an unsubstantiated whim and giving them guns to further inflate their egos might not be the best idea. Something to think about.

I have to agree with derby. Most of the border guards who I remember were all frightningly stupid. I'm for them being armed like Barny Fife.. but I doubt we'll see any actual effective use of them.

When that one suspect was rumored to be travelling up through the Pacific border crossing, all the guards walked away and hid. The union rep. was asked if they would do the same if they were armed and he definately didn't say no. I doubt there will be any real change.

But what is the alternative? Leaving our border undefended? And as far as bullies with guns go, you just watch, those kind of workers will be weeded out over time due to their stupid actions embarassing their department. It won't get them all but I'm used to Texas Law Enforcement here, anything would be nicer by comparison...

I will say that when I travel now although the security is tighter the TSA's don't seem anywhere near as abusive as they were just a couple years ago.

Exactly, over time the bullies and the inept tend to either get weeded out. Or promoted...

We don't have border guards. We have customs agents and immigration officers. Who are you giving the guns to?

If you have nuns manning the check points along your border then they're still border guards.

Customs agents and immigration officers who work on the border are, likewise, border guards.
