If China took Nancy hostage, Biden would pay for them to keep her.

Perhaps we could start a 50/50?

We should end this charade and just finally recognize Taiwan formally. They are a defacto country in every way that matters, now it's time to recognize that.

I don't think they are even 'defacto'. They are what remains of the Republic of China, from before the Communist revolution. They just didn't revolt.

I think part of being considered a country (under international law) is diplomatic recognition from a majority of countries worldwide.

That isn't the case in Taiwan's case because China has bribed/coerced most of the world into pulling their recognition of Taiwan in favour of mainland China.

But I agree, Taiwan is a country and the West should just recognize it already.

If it means losing trade with China, then so be it. They need our consumer markets more than we need the pittance of trade they allow into China. If it was the other way around, we'd have a $57 Billion trade surplus with them instead of the current $57 Billion trade deficit with China.

I can think of no serious protagonists for supporting Taiwan as a country with the neo class of leadership either con or liberal. Simply put money talks and BS walks. Now with the shifting geopolitical landscape there can be some give here but we are talking about here is a fundamental world shift = risk. Markets HATE risk and that is the current bulwark to change.

I agree that there aren't any politicians with the stones to do it, but I still think we should hope someone finds the guts to do so, as it's the best course of action in the face of Chinese belligerence.

China hints military exercises are dry run for future invasion of Taiwan

Aha. So they're going to try to pull the same shit that Russia is doing to Ukraine.

This could get interesting and scary.

No, Xi isn't an idiot like Putin. He knows China heavily depends on world trade for it's economy, and it's the west that are his biggest customers. China cannot survive the sanctions that have been slapped on Russia.

He will make a scene. He will act angry and offended, because he's conditioned his people to expect that. And will do nothing.

China wants to do to Taiwan what it has already done to Hong Kong. In the process it wants to retain control of over 60 % of the chip market, the very reason why Pelosi went there.

It doesn't yet have the military to do this. It has to beat war drums for domestic consumption but it can't act on it because it can't afford to kill their own economy. In this aspect Nixon was right in that the economy will keep China in check rather than casting their lot in with totalitarianism for now but their own rhetoric will be their undoing as it will compel them to act on their aggressive aims. This is a wildcard they can't control and must constantly keep ahead of which inherently makes China unstable.

Maybe when his current Death To Ukraine tour is over the heroic Roger Waters can bravely storm the beaches of Taiwan in order to convince the people who live there that they should happily embrace the same quasi-slave status currently enjoyed by Tibet, Hong Kong, and the Uighurs. Just because, y'know, it's all the fault of the US anyway.
