Awesome! I hope this goes through, one of the basic requirments should be the ability to converse in at least one of Canada's offical languages.

From what the article says, this is already a rule but no one was enforcing it.

$1:
Chow argued there should be subsidies available for immigrants so they can attend languages classes but not have to worry about missing work so they can feed their families.

Look and ye shall find. ESL IS subsidized.

Furthermore, CHANGE THE FREAKING FAMILY CLASS IMMIGRATION PROCESS!!

As a skilled worker, you have to take a test (Euro 170) in writing, listening, reading and speaking. (only the applicant though)

If you cannot take the citizenship test because of your language skills, you should not be a citizen. Simple, right?

It is that simple, no one is saying you cant immigrate, all they are saying is that before you are entitled to that little card saying you are "Canadian" you must at least be able to conduct business in either english or french....sounds reasonable to me.

Oh well Kenny will probably flop back to his usual in a few days...
Kenmore Kenmore:
The conservative idea is the rich get rich and the poor go screw themselves. lie, cheat and steal from the ordinary man.. vote for that.. not!

Kenmore Kenmore:
I favoured a carbon tax..ya.. why not .. dirty oil is poluting the world..something has to be done about it.. but then Alberta is immune from global warming and changes to the environment.. God put a wall around the rose country, to go with those living there who see Alberta trough rose coloured glasses.. right?

You also didnt seem very supportive of the Minister when he was soft on Gay Iranians...

Gay people are still being persecuted in this country. there is alot of bias and discrimination that goes on daily.. in the work place and schools... but hey if it works for immigration ...

I'll start the timer right... now!

Jason Kenney has been on a roll as of late. This, his denial of Galloway and cutting funding to radical groups that support terrorists are all damned good moves.
When Mr. Harper wants a break, I think we found his replacement.

There are a lot of laws or rules on the books that we dont enforce anymore for the sake of expediency. Maybe if we stuck with the original rules we wouldnt be where we are now.

One situation I can come up with right away about needing to get by in the national language(s) happened to me a few years ago when I was living in the Czech Republic... I had to call the emergency number because I saw someone injured and passed out on a side-street just after dawn. My Czech was still rudimentary, but I knew enough to be able to tell the police what the situation was, where we were and then deal with them when they arrived.
I was working in the country on a visa, not applying for Czech citizenship, but even then I think it would be dangerous to not be able to communicate with the locals, particularly government services.

Something simple as driving.. although I probably don't have to tell you folks in the rest of the country.

I wonder how fluent Chow's mom is and if she lives in a little Chinese enclave in Toronto just so she'll never have to learn the language. It's so sad to go to another country and not immerse yourself in tht culture.
