http://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/ken ... rt-n421126A KY court clerk was sent to jail today over her refusal to issue same sex marriage licenses. The courts have previously ordered her to issue the licenses. She was found in contempt of court today, and sent to jail after she refused a deal that would have not forced her to issue the licenses, but allowed her subordinates to issue the licenses. She has been ordered to be held indefinitely, or until she promises to issue the licenses. This should be interesting.

Good. That SHE doesn't want to issue them, fine (hypocritical, citing 'marriage is sacred' after 3 divorces and adultery, but whatever), but the OFFICE should be able to issue them. She cannot tell her officers that they can't, just because it goes against HER personal ideas. It is the law of the land. Issue them. All of them.

This issue went way too far and is now being exploited by the dingbats of the GOP presidential primary circuit. I don't see why they couldn't just fire her for refusing to do her job and violating the law of the state. We've got some dingus transit driver here in Calgary pulling the same crap, saying that because he's a Christian he shouldn't have to drive a city bus that's been painted in rainbow colours that the local Pride organization paid for. I liked it better in the past when most Christians behaved like respectably adults instead of the way things are today where too many of them have turned into the whiniest babies in the room.

Yeah, apparently somehow she was able to run sort of reign of terror in that office where the deputies were intimidated and coerced by her into rejecting applications that they knew they had to legally process and accept. As you said she's also been married four times and divorced three times, which shows that she's only a Christian of convenience when it comes to harassing the gays and a hypocritical self-righteous bullshit artist the rest of the time.

She has to be voted out of office, or impeached by the state legislature. Ky is in the Bible belt. A lot of politicians will not want to touch this one. Thats what makes this story different. She can choose to stay in jail as long as she wishes too. People are already organizing on her behalf.

That sucks. Hopefully the judges doesn't cave in and leaves her in jail for as long as she wants to violate the law.

She could have retired citing her Religious objection as the reason. That would have drawn attention to the issue, allowed her to maintain her beliefs, and kept herself out of Jail.
Undoubtedly she will now be viewed as some kind of Martyr for Jesus. That's laughable, but some people are easily impressed by such nonsense.

I don't understand the US anymore. Cops murder people almost at will and very infrequently do they see any real punishment. Rip off billions of dollars in a Wall St scam causing a global recession and get financially rewarded for it. Deny a marriage certificate to gay people and you go to jail.
Yep, those sure are some fucked up priorities.

Her job is to follow the law. And not god's law either but Caesars.
I think that if she had stuck to just denying licenses to same sex couples she might have had a chance but the fact the she was denying them to all couples shows that she's just a hate filled person looking to get her name in the paper. What's sad is that it's apparently hard to get rid of her.

Meh, she's no different than the tool who didn't want to drive the rainbow bus.

Now the left has created a martyr and that is a very powerful thing to religious people. Upside, this makes the case for a Constitutional Amendment to resolve the question once and for all.

Yep, those sure are some fucked up priorities. She's in jail for contempt of court, not for a criminal conviction. If she either agrees to start granting marriage licences or resign her position, she can leave the prison. She has so far refused to do either. But bringing the idea of jailing public officials for contempt of court back into the public conscious could create a lot of hassle. County sheriff is usually an elected post, and in some places the sheriff's department doesn't actively fight some crimes; marijuana possession being an example. If the sheriff's department doesn't follow that law, should they be jailed for contempt?

Police have discretion. IF they went after every little misdemeanor, they'd never get around to going after the big stuff. It's a matter of prioritizing. I would be surprised if they never charged somebody with possession, just don't do it if it's the only charge being brought. That's fundamentally different than what's going on here.

A good lawyer could easily argue otherwise, especially when you consider a federal judge put Ms. Davis under contempt. The federal government doesn't grant marriage licences, yet a federal court has jailed her for not following federal law. Marijuana is illegal on the federal level, but often legal or decriminalized at the state and local government. You can see the potential for being in contempt.
