Seniors are considered 5 X more likely to commit suicide in the first month of beginning SSRI treatment for depression. I was wondering if this had more to do with expectation, than an actual side effect. My mother is currently taking Paxil and when she first began taking it, she had the unrealistic expectation that it would be like throwing a switch, sad to happy. She didn't seem to understand or it wasn't explained that the drug has to build up in the system over time. So when the miracle cure didn't seem to materialize, she seemed more despondant at first. I'm wondering if this is perhaps a leading cause in the increase in suicides in seniors.
