Goodentag!

It was a long time ago in a place far, far away. Well, ok a few miles. Was searching for a site that had Canada featured prominently and found Vive le Canada and that site led me here. This place is has a more comfortable feel, and the people are phenomenal and the chat is interesting, timely and global with a twist of Canuck.

*does goat dance of joy*

Don't they say: "Grüß' Gott." or old fashioned "Gott zum Gruße!"

I was in Austria, twice, when we were driving to Croatia and back to Germany...
Nice language, dude, is it true that some austrians say that that their dialect of German is an own language?

Even the dialects inside our country are different laguages.

In the north the dialect is similar to that in south germany.

In the far west it is a combination os swiss-german and somthing else :mrgreen:
Those guys there are hardly to understand for me.

In the east it is like school-german

and as more you get south it becames a very special variation of german.

But all of them sounds much better than nothtern german dialect. Image

Gross Gott (not too sure about the spelling) anyway, good to hear from someone "over there". I was in Vienna for a little stay some time in 1986, I think, and we stayed at the hotel right next to the Royal Palace. I think the hotel was called (in German) the Emperors Guest house... or something like that. It was just before Christmas, and the city was just beautiful. We even got a chance to hear the Vienna Boys Choir one Sunday morning....

@PluggyRug
"Glückliche Jagd"??? You mean that greet of hunters?
In Germany it is "Weidmanns heil!" and the answer is "Weidmanns Dank!", cause "Weidmann" is an old-fashioned word for "Jäger"...

@Fuzo
School German? You mean "Hochdeutsch", right? Can't imagine an Austrian speaking ordinary German, funny thing ;-)

In Switzerland they speak "Allemannisch", also a german dialect...
Why are we writing in English when both of us are able to speak/write German??? *lol*

Hi Fuzo! I don't have a lot of impressive German phrases to welcome you with but I did overhear a particularly pungent expression 'shtinken hosen' that I am trying to work into a conversation...

Let's not forget Low German either. Of which there are many regional variations.
