DrCaleb DrCaleb:
Most bakeries don't make their own stuff anymore, so they likely couldn't even if they tried.
herbie herbie:
AFAIC there are no more bakeries. Only reheat the premade frozen shit places.
And honest to God, I've yet to see an M1 Mac on the shelf of any store. I know people who've got theirs online within a week....
... or account for the fact the SaveOn never has fresh fish, just shrink-wrapped frozen in China crap even though the road here only goes to Prince Rupert. For years and years before Covid hit.
I'll have to agree to disagree with you both. While I don't disagree that some bakeries do use frozen pastries and what not (Costco for example sells cases of frozen croissants, apple strudels, cookies and other goodies you can take home and bake yourself), but there are a lot of grocery stores and real bakeries (Cobbs, Bon Ton, Hazeldean, Dutch Delicious, Bliss, etc.) in Edmonton if you look for them. Some of them, like Bon Ton, are pretty pricey, but higher quality goods always are.
Most of the grocery stores around here bake their own bread - the easier types anyways, things like baguettes are super time-consuming - and make a fair amount of their pastries. My sister is a bakery manager at Co-op and she couldn't keep up with the demand for bread and cakes last year - half an hour after she put out 100 loaves of bread, it was all gone!
If you can see in the back (like I can at my nearby Sobey's and Safeway), the Hobart mixer (a professional grade stand mixer) they have back there is proof that they are baking fresh goodies. Nobody invests $5,000 in a Hobart if they are only going to bake frozen crap.
The other trick is to avoid the pre-packaged cakes and pies in colourful boxes with ingredients on them - those all come in frozen and are thawed overnight in the cooler before going out on the shelf.
