Bus drivers suck alright. I wonder why the bus driver didn't use lethal force to defend himself? Or why all the law abiding Edmontonian gun slingers didn't leap to the front of the bus brandishing away like mad? I wonder how many passengers thought the driver was getting his comeuppance for driving away on the guy running for the bus? Life's grand prade I guess.

Whats the matter did you get kicked off a bus once for not paying a fare?

Nope, I don't ride the bus. But I have in the past. There are plenty of bus drivers that are total assholes. I know that some people feel that no matter what kind of a shithead you are to people, you shouldn't get hassled for it.

When you suck, you sometimes get beat down for it. Such is life for teacup despots.

pathetic...did your wife run away with a bus driver?

he was doing his job , he made the guy pay to ride the bus. That calls for a beating?

Are you one of those big mouth punks steep with Internet bravado? Yes I suspect you are. Or a bus driver, though if you were a bus driver, you would be working right now wouldn't you? Nice talking to ya lonely unemployed internet guy.

Gary Edwin Mattson is also being charged with aggravated assault, and assaulting a peace officer after police allege he spit on an officer.

Around 7:30 a.m., officers were called to 139 Avenue and Victoria Trail where a bus driver was reportedly being assaulted by Mattson who appeared to be intoxicated.

The 24-year-old had allegedly assaulted the driver while on the bus, and then dragged him off the bus where he continued to assault him. Officials told CTV News seconds before the attack, the accused was arguing with the bus driver over the $2.50 fare.

The driver, who is in his 50s, was taken to hospital with serious head injuries.

Stu Litwinowich, president of the Edmonton Transit Union, describes the victim as a true gentleman.

"His passengers absolutely love him and there's no reason for it. He's been an operator for 33 years and has a heart of gold," said Litwinowich.

Sorry but the only one showing off 'internet bravado' here is you. What kind of 24-year old coward, drunken asshole does it take to beat a 58 year old man this severly simply because he wouldn't let you on for free?

The guy stayed out all night drinking like a bum, obviously he doesn't work, and he nearly kills this guy over the $2.50 he spent on Lysol instead of the bus fare he knew he'd need and you insinuate the driver deserved it?

c'mon. You're wrong. Plain and simple. I have no sympathy for voilent obnoxious drunks.

As an xcop and currently licensed by the LSUC I can assure you that any off-duty cop would immediately have taken control of this situation. Reading the article and noting Donny B also reading it, as well as the geographical locale, it's entirely possible drink, drugs, or lack of lithium contributed to this disgusting attack.

No one has been stipped of their rights to defend the victim - the law cleary states that one can use as much force as necessary to subdue/arrest - nothing wrong with a citizens arrest - however, you better make sure you have your ducks in a row or you too will be charged, regardless - as the law (read 'police') ensures their particularly fat and wide backside is protected individually as well as collectively.

There is no way I would stand by and watch this crap without intervening avec my stilettos and nails-of-fury - however, that's me and I have been trained.

To criticize the passengers and call them sheep is totally irresponsible - as this is a situation they are clearly not trained for, nor equipped to deal with. Furthermore, most police officers seldom, if ever, actually see a 'fight' - usually they just pick up the pieces.

So, don't stop Brenda - and knock off the supercilious 'tude dude. . . .

Nicely put.
Too many people just sit and watch shit like this go on and as Shep said, cops and soldiers were and are ordinary people too.

It's not an insult Brenda, where in what I posted is an insult?

People say that police should be held to a higher standard.

How about expecting people to be held up to a higher standard?

How about expecting people to step in and sort a bully out?

A bus full of 'average' people stand and watch? 40 people don't need to be 'trained', they just need to stop watching and take some action.

Then the same 'average' people can only criticise police when they find an opportunity? Come on.

Studies have shown that people are far more likely to react to such a situation if there are fewer, rather than more witnesses. That doesn't exonerate those who stood by and did nothing other than call 911, but it does make their actions understandable.

I can say that I was once witness to a swarming and it happened so fast that I didn't react until it was almost too late. Even then, I sought to protect myself and my friend, rather than those being swarmed.

In retrospect, I felt a little guilty, but those who were swarmed really should have known better than to make racist comments about natives on an LRT train full of them. But I did go straight to the police station afterwards and fill out a report and offer up names and descriptions of those involved. Despite the media fury this incident spawned, it was several weeks before detectives ever got around to interviewing me and showing me security camera footage.

EyeBrock EyeBrock:
I can safely say that any off duty cop or soldier wouldn't have froze. That's what we do, take on the bad guys.

This is exactly why cops and soldiers should be held to a higher standard, they have the training in deadly force most of the population do NOT have, as well as far more latitude in dispensing it then us regular folks do.

As Karra said, ANYBODY (as in a private person) is protected by law if they are trying to stop somebody committing a criminal offence, as in beating the crap out of a 58 year-old guy just doing his job.

Deadly force not required, just a bit of a backbone.

This support from Section 25 of the criminal code isn't an accident. This is Parliament saying to it's citizens "we will support the use of force by ANY person trying to stop a criminal committing an offence."

Oh and on the 'higher standard stuff', do you want me to post it all again for you or is twice enough?

I can't believe people did nothing, I don't buy the excuse that it happened so fast. If I was on the bus on saw/ heard something happening. I'd be paying attention pretty quick, shame on the men on that bus who did fuck all.

I've seen this before running past three "men" wathcing some dickhead guy nearly run over his girlfriend then get out to pursue his screaming girlfriend who was shouting for help, they did fuck all. Disgusting.

Geez, do ya think that somebody trained in the application of deadly force might be just a little more likely to react in such a situation? Do ya?

Don't you also think that someone with training (like cops or soldiers), might also be prepared if the violent person escalates the incident and pulls out a knife or gun? I don't know about Ontario, but Edmonton has an awful lot of stabbings FYI.

Your argument is like calling out people for not running into a burning baby to save a child. Most people, lacking the knowledge and training to fight fires, wouldn't do that any more than they would confront a violent offender attacking someone else nearby. That doesn't make them any less of a person than you or anyone else.

BTW, Karra was rebuking YOU dude...

Thank you.
It's funny to see that I am the only one admitting she would freeze. I wonder (statisticly) how many of the people responding to this thread would actually freeze, but are too chickenshit to admit it.
