Assaulted bus driver stable after second day of surgery

It was a second straight day of surgery today for a bus driver viciously beaten and kicked Thursday — over bus fare.

Tom Bregg, 58, was stable and responsive today, said Stu Litwinowich, president of the Amalgamated Transit Union Local 569.

“My understanding is he’s stable, and doing well considering the trauma he went through,” he said. “He’s responsive in that when they ask him to touch his index finger to his thumb, he does it.”

Bregg was “touch-and-go” during and after surgery Thursday after a passenger threw the bus driver down and kicked him repeatedly in the face and head just before 7:30 a.m. near 139 Avenue and Victoria Trail.

Witnesses described Bregg’s face as featureless after the attack.

Bregg was wheeled back into surgery today, this time so doctors could work on his eyes, said Litwinowich.

Family released Bregg’s name, but didn’t issue a statement to media.

But Litwinowich said, “His brother can’t believe it happened to him. He was such a great guy.”

Several students from John D. Bracco Junior High were on the bus when the driver was taken down, said principal Mary-Lou Cleveland.

“(The students have) great sympathy for the bus driver. They have a new appreciation for what bus drivers do,” she said.

Some classes discussed the attack Thursday.

“I think our kids are able to have a reflective moment on what a violent moment looks like. I think they’ll look differently ... on how life can change in a moment,” she said.

One of her students offered bus fare to the attacker before he threw a fit and tackled the driver.

Now a fund has been set up for Bregg at the River City Credit Union to accept public donations, said Litwinowich.

Gary Edwin Mattson, 24, has been charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault and assaulting a peace officer.

Police say he spit on an arresting officer.



Only family is permitted to visit right now. My three brothers, who are all in Edmonton were able to talk with Tom's brother. Although he has a very difficlt and undetermined recovery ahead, and should 'be ok', it's still way too early to know if he will ever ride again.

Ok look, bus driver's CAN be assholes, but so can police, military, doctors, nurses etc etc. Assholes aren't restricted to one type of job. Hell, I was assaulted by a bus driver years ago over a situation that involved myself and another passenger.
A situation I didn't create but was happy to escalate The bus driver ended up with a mouth full of roller skate(roller blades weren't invented yet). After all was said and done, the driver was the one charged with assault.

Now, the reason I mentioned this is because he was the exception to the rule in my bus riding days. By far, the vast majority of drivers I encountered were pleasant, helpful, courteous, all while doing a stressful job.

May Tom have a super speedy and full recovery and I hope that prick that beat him gets everything he deserves.

As far as I'm concerned anyone who has to degrade themselves to making physical threats on the internet is nothing more then an idiot. It's like locking yourself in a bullet proof room and trying to prove your a tough guy by having someone shoot a handgun at you.

I respond to insults and threats yes. I was not the first to start with the insults though. As for threats If someone tells you they would beat the hell out of you and you tell them where and when you will be in their town, you're not the one making threats.

I agree. Which is why I have no problem telling the few people who do fall into that trap when I will be in the neighborhood. Message boards are full of tough guys.
