PENATRATOR PENATRATOR: Freakinoldguy Freakinoldguy: They're fortunate he had underwear on. I can't speak for the Army but I know half the Navy didn't wear underwear in their racks. It made for some pretty weird looking scenario's when the action alarm sounded. 20 naked guys running aroung looking for flashgear, lifebelts and their clothes. Cocks all over the place, just another day on the job for you fishheads huh? lol Hey...just cuz you get wood every time you hear 'baaaaaaaaa' or smell wool.....Mind you MacDonalds do the same thing.

Maybe he's part of Clinton's don't ask don't tell, division. Hell, we didn't get to see pink underwear on ships till the 80's, but that's a whole nother story.

Brenda Brenda: What I wonder though... The rest of the guys are all wearing their full outfits. Doesn't that mean that either, this guy is making a funny, OR if this is serious, he is just a lazy shit who couldn't get dressed in the time he got, while the rest of his mates could? They could have been on night watch, or he was night watch and was sleeping.

If he was on night watch, shouldn't he be dressed and doing his job, instead of sleeping?

Guys are up on duty while others are sleeping, then vice versa, chances are this guy was in his pit getting the very precious few minutes of down time you are afforded on FOB's, the rest of the gang no doubt racking while he was on duty, that's how we did it, pretty simple concept.

It doesn't look like night so he was asleep on the day. Maybe the others were on the day watch and he had to joined them.

Well, okay it looks daytime in the picture...so I assume he was sleeping after night watch...I mean, I'm not a soldier, and a heavy sleeper, but generally it'll take maybe 5 seconds just to wake up. Another 5 seconds to get your thoughts, and your shit together. 10 seconds for the armor, and another 10 for making sure the gun works. I mean, he could have added an added 5 to find pants...IF they were there, and not hanging out to dry or something.

He did what he was suposed to which is get into the fight. I've done similar things during winter excersises. -30 with only my long johns, flack, tac, and helmet for 40 minutes. No frost bite I did however learn to sleep with my clothes on.

Brenda Brenda: If he was on night watch, shouldn't he be dressed and doing his job, instead of sleeping? There is a standard military defensive position doctrine used to rotate shifts over extended periods. During times of a high probability of attack such as just before dawn or dusk the unit be it a platoon/company or regiment everyone will be on alert this is known as 100% stand to. However, troops need to eat, clean up, sleep and catch up on the latest edition of hustler so they can't stay on 100% alert when they know there is a position to hold but the attack could be day/week or may not ever materialize. So, there is a rotation from 100% to 50% or even as low as 25% stand to where there can be as few as one man per trench keeping watch while the rest are gone to ground. When this happens the people who are not on watch are still expected to be ready to engage in short order if attacked. So to answer your question he was doing his job exactly as intended. He will learn to sleep in his gear in future no doubt, but his combat effectiveness was in no way hindered by the lack of pants.

I see this as no different than someone sleeping in their own home, or resting, and BANG CRASH...someone is trying to break in or is trying to steal your car. Pretty much everyone wakes up and runs to whats going on, regardless of what they are wearing. But that could be just me.

Good on him for grabbing what he needed and getting into the fight. Fighting is a pants optional thing for the Scots anyway. The rest of the world oughta cotton on...

PENATRATOR PENATRATOR: He has his helmet and body armour/vest on,therefor he is protected and has ammo, when the shit hits the fan, next to your weapon, that is what you grab, your pants can wait, 30 seconds is a long time to have a weapon out of a fire fight. Good on him, if someone can show me a pair of combat pants that stop bullets or shrapnel, I'd love to hear about it. Totally agreed. This guy had the kit he needed to stop the threat and fight. It shows me that he was more concerned about his comrades safety than looking good for the embedded AP photog. Good for him.
