I think it would be great to able to understand the FLQ's manifesto as it's read out on the 250th anniversary of the fall of New France.

Absolutely the internal working of the federal government and each provincial government should be bilingual.... you English unilingual guys are too much.. learn the other official language then you can qualify for a government job and stop whining!

If french was the majority language spoken in Canada would you sing the same tune ?

Of course you would. But it isnt, is it Smeagol?

Then why aren't native dialects not part of Official Languages act then ? Aren't Natives one of the founding people for Canada as well ? They are a minority group as well, infact their language is in more danger than the French language ever was.

So if you want to sort mail, retire at 55 with a great pension for Canada Kenmore....

You'll have to learn Algonquin first.

Absolutely.. and if I wasn't completely bilingual, and wanted a government job I would take what ever language course I needed.. We have TWO OFFICIAL LANGUAGES IN THIS COUNTRY... FRENCH AND ENGLISH AND THATS ALL! get over it! And the Native groups were indiginous. not founding... History or ( Social Studies for those who only went to grade school) will tell you who founded Canada.. French first.. then English..

Canadian_Mind Canadian_Mind:
How about givig provinces the option? So Quebec can be all french, NB and Ottawa billingual, and the rest of country all English.

That is the way it works. Quebec is NOT a bilingual Province. It has chosen French as the official language of the Province and they function entirely in French.

The only truly official bilingual Province is New Brunswick. They have two official languages. In the rest of the country Provinces have chosen English as their official language. I don't believe anything has change in that regard since Trudeau's time.

Someone please correct me if any of the other Provinces have declared themselves bilingual recently? I don't follow this stuff as closely as I once did. Provinces can be officially one language but do offer services in the other language.

The only services that must be provided in both official languages are those of the Federal Government. Not the Provinces.

"At the provincial level, New Brunswick is the only official bilingual province and only Quebec is officially unilingual (French only). In practice, all provinces, including Quebec, offer some bilingual services and some education in both official languages up to the high school level. English and French are official languages in all three territories (because they are federally administered). In addition, Inuktitut is also an official language in Nunavut, and nine aboriginal languages have official status in the Northwest Territories."(quoted from Wikipedia)

Not so! you can get government services in English, you can have a trial in English. you can be served in any store, restaurant etc in English.. you cannot advertise in English or post English signs.. other than brand name signs
So you are quite wrong.. with that statement.

Tell me Kenmore, why cant you advertise in English or post English signs? Whatever happened to freedom of expression? It seems that Quebec breaks more laws laid out in the Charter to stay French then they seem follow. If this crap was tried in another part of Canada it would be an instant case before the Human-rights commission.

I suppose I might be pretty dumb in the grand scheme of things, but even I know that Quebecois Canadians are a culture, not a race. I suppose that would make me a "culturalist" though. I'll 'fess up to that, no problem.

Being called a racist by the likes of you is like a badge of honour as far I'm concerned.

At this point, you're wandering around the ring completely punch drunk. Best thing you could do right now is just stay down.
