Thats true MacDonaill, most of the negativity from the west is based on myths and not on actual experience. I hear it from relatives in BC and most of them have never been farther east than Alberta.

MacDonaill MacDonaill:
Not true. Anglo-Quebeckers get service in English pretty anywhere. I lived in the continents most Francophone region where more than 99% of the population was French-speaking, and I could have lived my whole life there in English (and knew some people who did just that!)

You can basically get by quite nicely in Quebec without ever knowing a word of French. Not the same story in Ontario if you don't speak anything but French.

Well thats because of exposure to another language in a continent with close to 400 million anglophones vs 8 million francophones, its just natural that there isn't more anglophones that speak french. Has nothing to do with being lazy, ignorant or racist towards francophones.

However you try and spin it, you get French service in Oakville and I don't get English service in Joliet.

You are probably right but the whole optics of Bill 101 and the politics of the Bloc/seperation etc, really doesn't help to arouse much sympathy for the language of 30% of the country being rammed down the other 70%'s collective throats.

I disagree EyeBrock, most pure Québecois don't give a shit what is spoken outside the province.. be it English, French, German etc. Québecois(e) are a nation of people and are recognized as such by the Parliament of Canada. You can thank Czar harper for that, although it went without saying. It is not Québecers who are shoving anything down the throats of Canadians. Bilingualism was signed into law by none other than M. Mulroney.. The two official languages of Canada are entrenched in the constitution. And when we are no longer a constitutional monarchy, they will be entrenched in the new constitution of the first republic of Canada. So when you talk of the percentages or ratios, you have to recognize we are taking about french as the official language of Québec and we have the right to protect it. Just last week the government in Ottawa introduced a bill that would protect french in Québec stating all new immigrants must learn french to come to the province.. the shoving argument doesn't wash, its just a bitter, trivial objection to what is recognized by all provinces. C'est la vie!

To sum up when Ken is saying. " Bilingualism in Canada is the law learn to love it, except in Quebec where its our sole right to object or accept it, not yours."

P.S. Bilingualism was Trudeau's brainchild not Mulroney.

Mulroney signed it into law... and there are provinces where you don't hear french or have the availability of services.

No he didn't,
I think your mistaken ammendments to "official bilingualism" of course he did, most Prime Ministers make them. Who's idea was it, who tabled it for the first time ?

Yeah, so what ?

Adapt instead of filing a complaint for once.

Bilingualism is only on the federal level and in the Province of New Brunswick. EVERY other province is officially unilingual. Quebec is no different from them, and follows the Charter of Rights and Freedoms completely, offering schools and government services in both languages where numbers warrant.

"Quote" Yeah, so what ?

Practice what you preach, you are living in the province, learn the language.

I digress, Mulroney signed multiculturalism into law..not bilingualism. I stand corrected. Must have been after a night shift lol..
