Someone please correct me if any of the other Provinces have declared themselves bilingual recently? I don't follow this stuff as closely as I once did. Provinces can be officially one language but do offer services in the other language.

I believe "yes man" McGuinty is getting his nads squeezed to have Ontario declared a bilingual Province. The City of Ottawa is declared bilingual and city hall is starting to follow the same model as their federal counter parts.

Currently there's a case on the way to the supreme court Galganov/Brisson vs the Township of Russel Ont. Where the passed a bylaw requiring all business signs to be in english and french or be fined. Which is a violation of freedom of expression under the charter.

Keep those kooky language laws in Quebec.

Absolutely.. and if I wasn't completely bilingual, and wanted a government job I would take what ever language course I needed.. We have TWO OFFICIAL LANGUAGES IN THIS COUNTRY... FRENCH AND ENGLISH AND THATS ALL! get over it! And the Native groups were indiginous. not founding... History or ( Social Studies for those who only went to grade school) will tell you who founded Canada.. French first.. then English..

Actually the Norse(Scandanavian) where the first to set foot on North America if you want to get all historic on us. Followed by Christopher Columbus.

Its ok I know you were a victim of the Quebec history curriculum as a child.

Either way Native people where here first werent they ? Whats your aversion to help preserve their culture and language by enshrining it in the Official Languages act, and allow them to sort mail in their native tongue are you racist or something ?

I don't recall saying I had an aversion to enshrining native language..I said there are ( at present) two official languages.. Until that changes, ( and probably won't) people should learn both, especially immigrants. Now that being said, I think that people whose language is other than those two, should be able to speak them among themselves. But it is ridiculous that someone immigrated here 18-20 yrs ago and cannot speak a word of English or french. Personally, I thank God every day for bill 101. Canada is being eroded and if we don't put the breaks on it.. well you know the rest.

Zipperfish Zipperfish:

One of the biggest misperceptions is people have to be bilingual in order to get a job with the federal government.

While 61% of respondents believe that, in fact 60% of federal government positions only require knowledge of one official language

This is not a misperception. Only 60% require one offical language. But the top 40% require both. Only 17% of Canada is bilingual (last time I checked), the majority of which are in Quebec. You're picking your civil service elite from 17% of teh population. Bascially the federal civil service is run by Quebec. And "that's the way--uh-huh, uh-huh--they like it."

Founded and losted it mate. Fair and square.

The Treaty of Paris spells it all out for you.

You guys need to get over this 'conquered nation' thing. Even the Irish don't hold grudges this long.

Reading the FLQ manifesto and prohibiting re-enactments doesn't change an historical thing. You guys lost, just like the Brits lost in the 13 Colonies a few years later.
Now move on, I need some good stilton to go with all this whine.

Quebec keeps digging itself a hole with the rest of the country, people are getting sick of their incessant whining. Sooner or later the walls are going to collapse on it and I for one am not going to dig it out. I figure the world would be more efficient if we all spoke one language anyways, not to say english should be it but as long as we all speak one language.

You'll attract more bees with honey.

Absolutely the internal working of the federal government and each provincial government should be bilingual.... you English unilingual guys are too much.. learn the other official language then you can qualify for a government job and stop whining!

Then why aren't native dialects not part of Official Languages act then ? Aren't Natives one of the founding people for Canada as well ? They are a minority group as well, infact their language is in more danger than the French language ever was.

Actually Inuit is now considered an official federal language in Nunavut only.

Kenmore, you can get "French services" in Saskatchewan but we are officially an English speaking Province. Quebec chose to be unilingually French. Not bilingual. That's the way it works. It is immaterial whether or not you can get some services in the other language.

Officially, the ONLY bilingual Province in Canada is NEW Brunswick. That's just the way it is.

I believe you are right. Is McGuinty going to give in to the pressure? You have my vote when you say, "keep those kooky language laws in Quebec." What kind of government tells people what language they can speak? Let the marketplace decide.
