I always carry a couple hundred in cash. Interac is only reliable until it isn't. Then you are stuck in a restaurant with no way to pay the bill. What surprises me is so many companies are dependent on one service.

I always carry some cash too and I have a prepaid credit card... and the ATM is a 5 minute walk.

Apparently are carrier gets bandwidth off rogers so we were SOL for most of the day. We always made sure to have some cash on hand and I always have some tucked in my wallet. The reserves debt used to be very spotty it only takes one time of driving on fumes to the next gas station to teach me to always have a secret stash.

Actually, one of the things I just discovered at the store worries me. They were accepting cash, or credit, but their debit was down. So they must use a different network to process credit transactions. Which means they store that information. 8O What could go wrong?

More likely mastercard/visa aren't relying on rogers network anywhere. Whereas moneris, or access to the banks themselves, are utilizing rogers in the chain.

The fact that with one Telecom company going down, a large swathe of the country loses communications ability and the ability to engage in commerce, the government should take notice and do something about these monopolies. It’s a borderline national security issue at this point.

Internet should be a utility. Not in the hands of private companies.

ATM may not have worked either. You'd have to go to the bank itself and if they have rogers without a fail over, they'd be SOL too potentially.

I was thinking that the internet was already considered a utility. With a quick search I found this:

$1:
Public utilities — the supply of electricity, gas, water, sewerage and phone lines — can be publicly or privately owned, but they are united by the fact that all of them are deemed essential for modern living.

We tend to classify, protect and provision public utilities differently in various parts of the world. Nonetheless, looking at that list of utilities, most people today would likely identify a missing piece. In today's world where so much of life and work happens online, shouldn't the internet be considered a utility?

Speaking from distant experience, the ATMs at branch locations are not internet connected. They go through the banks internal network. That usually doesn't route through an ISP, but through a network carrier.

Things may have changed since I worked at IBM, but banks were very paranoid about internet connecting anything back then.

If there was ever an argument against the big three monopoly, I think yesterday was it.

It was just so decent of all those retailers to accept cash...
Now many of them will get hosed when the greedy banks charge them handling fees to deposit the coin of the realm.

Especially since Rogers wants to gobble up and shit out my current ISP, which was not affected.

Every place I went was either with rogers or the debit machines were tied into rogers. I had cash so no big deal. You would think all that would give people time to stop and reflect on how bad monopolies are if it could take down so much. They keep saying that they have safe guards but we saw no evidence of them. Though I had to laugh at some of the young people there were and still are things to do without the internet!

What we saw was evidence against them. I have designed enough networks and data centres to know that if they failed, then there is a single point of failure somewhere and whatever redundancies they thought they had, this fail showed them ineffective.

You don't ever patch all your systems at the same time, you patch one of the branches, and if it fails you roll back, leaving your other pathways free from disruption. If it was a beaver chewing cables, or someone digging before they called, or some cleaning lady polishing the big red button with (!) above it; then there is a single point of failure and your network is not redundant.
