CRTC ordering Rogers to explain in detail what caused massive network outage

Simple, they pushed out an update to the routers that had an unexpected result and they had no roll back in place. Same as last year. They didn't learn from this because the CRTC never forced them to change the work culture.

The failure here isn't Rogers, it's the CRTC.

DrCaleb DrCaleb:
Of course, if you are on Rogers you won't see that story.

I was in Jasper when this happened and you're correct, I didn't see that story or know what was happening until a store clerk told me late in the afternoon.

Fortunately, I'm one of the selct few Canadians (although probably not on CKA) who always has cash on hand, so it didn't affect me other than that I was unable to pay for street parking in Jasper (which uses an app to register and whose single street pay machine was out of service).

Still, it's pretty obvious that Canada needs a public phone and internet option to avoid this BS in the future.

I think the backbone infrastructure should be a different company than the telecom company. Perhaps even have the Internet/Cellular/land line infrastructure separate from each other and each a Crown corp. That would theoretically ensure equal access and equal cost to everyone.

Like Supernet here in Alberta. Anyone can be an ISP through it, and many cellular and wireless options other than Rogers/Bell/Telus/Shaw are available. Especially for Rural services.

Phone is dead tech. VOIP supersedes it, reliable internet is the future. That will require a starlink type rollout on a national level. Possible over time but not cheap. We did it before with highways.
