Generally speaking, a strong emotional attachment to a location is what keeps ghosts stuck in a specific location. Whether it's a house they spent their entire lives in and eventually died in, or a place where violent death occured as two examples. For others, it may be a case of feeling like there is "unfinished business".
At least that's the explanation I've heard.
My previous workplace had a "lingering spirit". It was the original owner and founder of the company who had a heart attack while at work and passed away on the premises in the early 70's. And this is fact... his son took over running the shop and was still there during the time I worked there. Anyway, over the 11 years I worked there myself and pretty much everyone who worked there had some interesting experiences. Nothing bad or scary, just sometimes annoying. Occasionally when someone new started working there they would comment on something weird that had happened and then someone else would say, in a joking way, "Ah... must be Eric hanging around again". They'd tell the newbie who Eric was and they'd be kinda freaked out sometimes. Oddly enough I don't recall anyone flat out calling bs on it... skeptical maybe but otherwise unable to explain some of the things that happened.
Besides my experience above I've had others too and I've known several people that have shared unexplainable experiences as well.
So, yeah, I'm open minded about the existence of something else after death.
