The Canadian voting system is ridiculous. You can't directly vote for the party leaders, but only for who represents that party in your riding. So what happens if you want, let's say, Stephen Harper to be Prime Minister, but you like a member of another party in your riding? You're screwed. In the U.S., where I lived for quite awhile (I have dual citizenship), you can vote for President, Congress, or local people and you can vote for no matter what party they are with. So, you can vote for a Republican Senator and a Democratic President. And what's even more ludicrous is that Liberal Party volunteers came through my neighbourhood over the weekend asking for support for Ken Dryden who represents my riding. I asked if I could vote for him and still vote for a non-liberal candidate for prime minister. They told me I could! Can you imagine campaign supporters canvassing a neighbourhood not knowing that I couldn't do that...or knowing it but lying to try and get me to vote Liberal?
Sheesh!
Not really. Our system can still get more stuff done through compromises than yours can. Washington is way more polarized and deadlocked right now than Ottawa has ever been.
We also don't take it to an insane degree the way you damn Yankees do? You have to vote for the local dogcatcher? Is that really necessary?
