The context is still wrong that is the point of conjecture.

Example: black people who work in the cotton field not the same as saying cotton pickin' nigger. Ergo The brutal Japs bastards were butchers is not the same as saying the imperial forces of Japan committed a host of war crimes. On the surface both say the same thing, the nuance is in the details. Jap bastard is on par with nigger. It labels an entire race to the actions of a few a race that he is representing as a Canadian MP.

EyeBrock EyeBrock:
At the end of the day the Japanese committed horrendous atrocities against allied prisoners of war. It should not be forgotten. Fletcher was right, he should have reworded it in our politically correct universe.

Maybe he could have said something about fluffy bunny rabbits or how Canada now accepts war criminals from all over.

The Nazi's and Imperial Japanese forces (to a lesser extent the Italian Fascists) routinely committed atrocious acts against POW's and Fletcher pointed that out.

He apologised for offending all you bleeding hearts who like the truth sugar coated. Stop whining.

While the MP should have worded his comments better, it is undeniable that the Japanese of WII were brutal, along with the Germans and Fascist Italians and all their allies, as was their nature. This is well documented. I sympathize with him for his feelings with respect to that. I have met several veterans who hold way harsher views than him, but then again they were there. He definately should have thought about his responsibility as a Canadian politician in the year 2005. I wish that the events surrounding the internment of Japanese-heritage citizens had been differant but that was a differant time and there is nothing I can do about it now. Think about what they did to allied soldiers? Who started that mess? Was it Canada? Nope. See, we didn't intern Japanese-Canadians first and then the war began, it was the other way around, the way I remember. Thats when things got stupid.Things tend to go more black and white in those kinds of times, just ask the Americans, they are doing it now and can't figure out why we don't support them. I'm not saying that is right, just that was the way things were back then.

As usual this thread has degenerated into a “Left Vs Right” argument with a hint of the customary “I hate yanks” thrown in for good measure.

Fletcher said the wrong thing, however we should not lose sight of the fact that he was right. The Japanese military tortured and murdered thousands of allied POW’s. They were indeed a right bunch of “bastards”. No amount of politically correct comparisons with the internment of Japanese natives in Canada will excuse that.

Time for a new thread.

QBC thew media in the USA is left wing also. This is the same media that proclaims Ex KKK member Robert Byrd Senator from West Virginia The best thing since sliced bread. Says Trent Lott is a Racist. CNN the Clinton news netwrok and Msnbc are very left wing. And CBS have you ever heard of the lies Dan Rather told about G W Bush. There are very few balanced news programs in the USA most are left leaning I would say 95%.
